THEoutskirtsofthelittletownofThorpeAmbrose,onthesidenearestto“thegreathouse。”haveearnedsomelocalcelebrityasexhibitingtheprettiestsuburbofthekindtobefoundinEastNorfolk。Herethevillasandgardensareforthemostpartbuiltandlaidoutinexcellenttaste,thetreesareintheprimeoftheirgrowth,andthehealthycommonbeyondthehousesrisesandfallsinpicturesqueanddelightfulvarietyofbrokenground。Therank,fashion,andbeautyofthetownmakethisplacetheireveningpromenade;andwhenastrangergoesoutforadrive,ifheleavesittothecoachman,thecoachmanstartsbywayofthecommonasamatterofcourse。
Ontheoppositeside,thatistosay,onthesidefurthestfrom“thegreathouse。”thesuburbsintheyear1851wereuniversallyregardedasasoresubjectbyallpersonszealousforthereputationofthetown。

Noiselesslyandsmoothlyshecameon,withagentleandregularundulationoftheprintgown;withthelove-locksoftlyliftedfrommomenttomomentintheeveningbreeze;withherheadalittledrooped,andhereyesontheground——inwalk,andlook,andmanner,ineverycasualmovementthatescapedher,expressingthatsubtlemixtureofthevoluptuousandthemodestwhich,ofthemanyattractiveextremesthatmeetinwomen,isinaman’seyesthemostirresistibleofall。

Onceonthegroundthatshehadchosenforherpurpose,shemetthedifficultiesofthepositionwithperfecttactandself-possession。Afterwalkingsomethirtyyardsalongtheroad,shelethernosegaydrop,halfturnedroundinstoopingtopickitup,sawthemanstoppingatthesamemomentbehindher,andinstantlywentonagain,quickeningherpacelittlebylittle,untilshewaswalkingatthetopofherspeed。Thespyfellintothesnarelaidforhim。Seeingthenightcoming,andfearingthathemightlosesightofherinthedarkness,herapidlylessenedthedistancebetweenthem。MissGwiltwentonfasterandfastertillsheplainlyheardhisfootstepbehindher,thenstopped,turned,andmetthemanfacetofacethenextmoment。
