  Withthebestphysiciantobefound,andwiththeBirdWomanandMcLeaninattendance,thefour-hours\'runtoChicagobegan。TheAngelconstantlywatchedoverFreckles;bathedhisface,strokedhishand,andgentlyfannedhim。Notforaninstantwouldsheyieldherplace,orallowanyoneelsetodoanythingforhim。TheBirdWomanandMcLeanregardedherinamazement。Thereseemedtobenoendtoherresourcesandcourage。TheonlytimeshespokewastoaskMcLeanifheweresurethespecialwouldbereadyonthePittsburghroad。Herepliedthatitwasmadeupandwaiting。

  Atfiveo\'clockFreckleslaystretchedontheoperating-tableofLakeViewHospital,whilethreeofthegreatestsurgeonsinChicagobentoverhim。Attheircommand,McLeanpickeduptheunwillingAngelandcarriedhertothenursestobebathed,haveherbruisesattended,andtobeputtobed。
