Amongthebirdsitreallyseemedasifthelittleyellowfellowswereinthepreponderance。Atleast,theywereuntiltheredwingedblackbirdsandbobolinks,thathadnestedontheupland,suddenlysawintheswampthegardenoftheLordandcameswarmingbyhundredstofeastandadventureuponittheselastfewweeksbeforemigration。
Neverwasthereafinerfeastspreadforthebirds。Thegrasseswerefilledwithseeds:so,too,wereweedsofeveryvariety。
Fallberrieswereripe。Wildgrapesandblackhawswereready。
Bugswerecreepingeverywhere。Themuckwasyeastywithworms。
Insectsfilledtheair。Naturemadegloriouspauseforholidaybeforehernextchange,andbynoneofthefrequentersoftheswampwasthismoreappreciatedthanbythebigblackchickens。
Theyseemedtofeelthenewreignofpeaceandfullnessmostofall。
Asforfood,theydidnotevenhavetohuntforthemselvesthesedays,forthefeastsnowbeingspreadbeforeLittleChickenweremorethanhecoulduse,andhewasgladtohavehisparentscomedownandhelphim。
Hewasafine,big,overgrownfellow,andhiswings,withquillsofjettyblack,gleamingwithbronze,weresostrongtheyalmostliftedhisbody。Hehadthreeinchesoftail,andhisbeakandclawsweresharp。Hismusclesbegantoclamorforexercise。
Heracedthefortyfeetofhishomebackandforthmanytimeseveryhouroftheday。Afterafewdaysofthat,hebeganliftingandspreadinghiswings,andfloppingthemuntilthedownonhisbackwasfilledwithelmfiber。Thenhecommencedjumping。Thefunnylittlehops,springs,andsidewiseboundshegavesetFrecklesandtheAngel,hiddenintheswamp,watchinghim,intosmotheredchucklesofdelight。
