  ButwhatwasthisCurse?Why,First,ItwasawrongsentencepastuponDavid;ShimeicalledhimBloodyman,manofBelial,whenhewasnot。Secondly,Hesentencedhimtotheevilthatatpresentwasuponhim,forbeingabloodyman,thatis,againstthehouseofSaul,whenthatpresentevilovertookDavid,forquiteanotherthing。

  Supposethatamanshouldsaywithhismouth,IwishthattheKingsPicturewasburned;wouldnotthismanssosaying,renderhimasanEnemytothePersonoftheKing?Evensoitiswiththemthat,bycursing,wisheviltotheirneighbour,ortothemselves,theycontemntheImage,eventheImageofGodhimself。

  Atten。Butdoyouthinkthatthementhatdothus,dothinkthattheydosovilely,soabominably?

  Wise。Thequestionisnotwhatmendobelieveconcerningtheirsin,butwhatGodsWordsaysofit:IfGodsWordsaysthatSwearingandCursingaresins,thoughmenshouldcountthemforVertues,theirrewardwillbearewardforsin,towit,thedamnationofthesoul。

  SupposethenthatatowardlyLadbeputtobeanApprenticewithonethatisreputedtobeaGodlyman,yetthatLadmayberuinedmanywayes;thatis,ifhisMasterbenotcircumspectinallthingsthatrespectbothGodandman,andthatbeforehisApprentice。

  1。If{42b}hebenotmoderateintheuseofhisApprentice;ifhedriveshimbeyondhisstrength;ifheholdshimtoworkatunseasonablehours;ifhewillnotallowhimconvenienttimetoreadtheWord,toPray,&c。Thisisthewaytodestroyhim;thatis,inthosetenderbegin[n]ingsofgoodthoughts,andgoodbeginningsaboutspiritualthings。

  2。IfhesuffershishousetobescatteredwithprofaneandwickedBooks,suchasstiruptolust,towantonness,suchasteachidle,wanton,lasciviousdiscourse,andsuchashasatendencytoprovoketoprofanedrolleryandJesting;andlastly,suchastendtocorrupt,andperverttheDoctrineofFaithandHoliness。Allthesethingswilleatasdothacanker,andwillquicklyspoil,inYouth,&c。thosegoodbeginningsthatmaybeputtingforththemselvesinthem。

  3。IftherebeamixtureofServants,thatis,ifsomeverybadbeinthesameplace,that’sawayalsotoundosuchtenderLads;fortheythatarebadandsordidServants,willbeoftenandtheyhaveanopportunitytoo,tobedistillingandfomentingoftheirprofaneandwickedwordsandtricksbeforethem,andthesewilleasilystickinthefleshandmindsofYouth,tothecorruptingofthem。

  4。IftheMasterhaveoneGuiseforabroad,andanotherforhome;

  thatis,ifhisReligionhangsbyinhishouseashisCloakdoes,andhebeseldominit,excepthebeabroad;this,youngbeginnerswilltakenoticeof,andstumbleat。Wesay,Hedgeshaveeyes,andlittlePitchershaveears;andindeed,{43a}ChildrenmakeagreaterinspectionintotheLivesofFathers,Masters,&c。thanoft-timestheyareawareof:AndthereforeshouldMastersbecarefull,elsetheymaysoondestroygoodbeginningsintheirServants。

  Wise。Youtalk,hemindednoneofthesethings;nay,allthesewere{43d}abominabletohim。

  1。ForgoodBooks,theymightlieinhisMastershousetilltheyrottedforhim,hewouldnotregardtolookintothem;but,contrary-wise,wouldgetallthebadandabominableBooksthathecould,asbeastlyRomances,andbooksfullofRibbauldry,evensuchasimmediatelytendedtosetallfleshlylustsonfire。True,hedurstnotbeknowntohaveanyofthese,tohisMaster;thereforewouldheneverletthembeseenbyhim,butwouldkeepthemincloseplaces,andperusethematsuchtimes,asyieldedhimfitopportunitiesthereto。

  Wise。Yousaytrue。Butyet,methinks,therearestillsuchbadeffectsfollow,often,uponthecommissionofit,thatifmenwouldconsiderthem,itwouldput,atleast,astoptotheircareertherein。

  Atten。Whatotherevileffectsattendthissin?

  Wise。Outwardshameanddisgrace,andthatintheseparticulars:

  First,Thereoftenfollowsthisfoulsin,theFoulDisease,nowcalledbyusthePox。Adiseasesonauseousandstinking,soinfectioustothewholebodyandsointailedtothissinthathardlyareanycommonwithuncleanWomen,buttheyhavemoreorlessatouchofittotheirshame。

  Atten。Thatisafouldiseaseindeed:Iknew{55b}amanoncethatrottedawaywithit;andanotherthathadhisNoseeatenoff,andhisMouthalmostquitesewedupthereby。

  Wise。ItisaDisease,thatwhereitis,itcommonlydeclares,thatthecausethereofisUncleanness。Itdeclarestoallthatbeholdsuchaman,thatheisanodious,abeastly,uncleanperson。

  ThisisthatstrangepunishmentthatJobspeaksof,thatisappointedtoseizeontheseworkersofIniquity。{55c}

  Atten。ThenitseemsyouthinkthatthestrangepunishmentthatJobtherespeaksof,shouldbethefouldisease。

  Atten。Whatotherthingsfollowuponthecommissionofthisbeastlysin?

  Wise。Why,often-timesitisattendedwithMurder,withthemurderoftheBabebegottenonthedefiledbed。HowcommonitisfortheBastard-getterandBastard-bearer,toconsenttogethertomurdertheirChildren,willbebetterknownatthedayofJudgement;yetsomethingismanifestnow。

  TheAdulteresswillhuntforthepreciouslife。Whosocommittethadulterywithawoman,lackethunderstanding,andhethatdothitdestroyshisownsoul。{57c}AnWhoreisadeepditch,andastrangewomanisanarrowpit。Herhouseinclinestodeath,andherpathesuntothedead。Nonethatgoinuntoherreturnagain,neithertaketheyholdofthepathoflife。Shehathcastdownmanywounded;yeamanystrongmenhavebeenslainbyher,herhouseisthewaytoHell,goingdowntotheChambersofDeath。{58a}

  Wise。Verilysotheydoe。Butyetthatwhichmakesthewholemoredreadful,is,Thatmenaregivenuptothissin,becausetheyareabhorredofGod,andbecauseabhorred,thereforetheyshallfallintothecommissionofit;andshalllivethere。Themouththatis,theflatteringLipsofastrangewomanisadeeppit,theabhorredoftheLordshallfalltherein。{58b}Thereforeitsaithagainofsuch,thattheyhavenoneInheritanceintheKingdomofChristandofGod。{58c}

  Wise。True。Butsuppose,thatinsteadofalltheseJudgments,thissinhadattendingofitallthefelicitiesofthislife,andnobitterness,shame,ordisgracemixedwithit,yetonehourinHellwillspoilall。O!thisHell,Hell-fire,DamnationinHell,itissuchaninconceivablepunishment,thatwereitbutthroughlybelieved,itwouldnipthissin,withothers,inthehead。Buthereisthemischief,thosethatgiveupthemselvestothesethings,dosohardenthemselvesinUnbeliefandAtheismaboutthethings,thepunishmentsthatGodhaththreatnedtoinflictuponthecommittersofthem,thatatlasttheyarriveto,almost,anabsoluteandfirmbeliefthatthereisnoJudgmenttocomehereafter:Elsetheywouldnot,theycouldnot,nonotattempttocommitthissin,bysuchabominablelanguageassomedo。
