Theworkbeforeus，therefore，nowstandsapartbyitself。InitscompositionBunyanseemstohavebeengreatlyinfluenced，sofarasformisconcerned，byabookwhichhiswifebroughtwithheronhermarriage，andwhich，ashetellsusinhisGraceAbounding，theyreadtogether。ItwasentitledThePlaineMan’sPathwaytoHeaven:

Bunyan’sMrWiseman，likeDent’sTheologus，holdsforthinstructivediscourse，whiletheMrAttentiveoftheformer，likethePhilagathusofthelatter，listensanddrawsonhisteacherbyfriendlyquestionings。ThereisnotinBunyan’sconference，asthereisinDent’s，anAsunetus，whoplaysthepartofanignorantmantocomeoutenlightenedandconvincedatlast，oranAntilegon，whocarpsandcavilsalltheway；andthereisnotinDent’sbookwhatthereisinBunyan’s，abiographicalnarrativeconnectingthevariouspartsofthedialogue；butthegroundworkofeachisthesame——asearchingmanifestationandexposureofthenatureandevilsofvariousformsofimmorality。
