  ThusFortune,afterhavingdivertedherself,accordingtocustom,withtwoorthreefrolicks,atlastdisposedallmatterstotheadvantageofourheroine;whoindeedsucceededadmirablywellinherdeceit,consideringitwasthefirstshehadeverpractised。And,tosaythetruth,Ihaveoftenconcluded,thatthehonestpartofmankindwouldbemuchtoohardfortheknavish,iftheycouldbringthemselvestoincurtheguilt,orthoughtitworththeirwhiletotakethetrouble。

  Honouractedherparttotheutmostperfection。ShenosoonersawherselfsecurefromalldangerofBridewell,awordwhichhadraisedmosthorribleideasinhermind,thansheresumedthoseairswhichherterrorsbeforehadalittleabated;andlaiddownherplace,withasmuchaffectationofcontent,andindeedofcontempt,aswaseverpractisedattheresignationofplacesofmuchgreaterimportance。

  Ifthereaderpleases,therefore,wechuserathertosaysheresigned-whichhath,indeed,beenalwaysheldasynonymousexpressionwithbeingturnedout,orturnedaway。

  Mr。Westernorderedhertobeveryexpeditiousinpacking;forhissisterdeclaredshewouldnotsleepanothernightunderthesameroofwithsoimpudentaslut。Toworkthereforeshewent,andthatsoearnestly,thateverythingwasreadyearlyintheevening;when,havingreceivedherwages,awaypackedbagandbaggage,tothegreatsatisfactionofeveryone,butofnonemorethanofSophia;who,havingappointedhermaidtomeetheratacertainplacenotfarfromthehouse,exactlyatthedreadfulandghostlyhouroftwelve,begantoprepareforherowndeparture。

  Butfirstshewasobligedtogivetwopainfulaudiences,theonetoheraunt,andtheothertoherfather。IntheseMrs。Westernherselfbegantotalktoherinamoreperemptorystilethanbefore;

  butherfathertreatedherinsoviolentandoutrageousamanner,thathefrightenedherintoanaffectedcompliancewithhiswill;whichsohighlypleasedthegoodsquire,thathechangedhisfrownsintosmiles,andhismenacesintopromises:hevowedhiswholesoulwaswraptinhers;thatherconsentforsoheconstruedthewords,\"Youknow,sir,Imustnot,norcan,refusetoobeyanyabsolutecommandofyours\"hadmadehimthehappiestofmankind。Hethengaveheralargebank-billtodisposeofinanytrinketsshepleased,andkissedandembracedherinthefondestmanner,whiletearsofjoytrickledfromthoseeyeswhichafewmomentsbeforehaddartedfireandrageagainstthedearobjectofallhisaffection。

  Instancesofthisbehaviourinparentsaresocommon,thatthereader,Idoubtnot,willbeverylittleastonishedatthewholeconductofMr。Western。Ifheshould,IownIamnotabletoaccountforit;sincethathelovedhisdaughtermosttenderly,is,Ithink,beyonddispute。Soindeedhavemanyothers,whohaverenderedtheirchildrenmostcompletelymiserablebythesameconduct;which,thoughitisalmostuniversalinparents,hathalwaysappearedtometobethemostunaccountableofalltheabsurditieswhicheverenteredintothebrainofthatstrangeprodigiouscreatureman。

  ThelatterpartofMr。Western’sbehaviourhadsostronganeffectonthetenderheartofSophia,thatitsuggestedathoughttoher,whichnotallthesophistryofherpoliticaunt,norallthemenacesofherfather,hadeveroncebroughtintoherhead。Shereverencedherfathersopiously,andlovedhimsopassionately,thatshehadscarceeverfeltmorepleasingsensations,thanwhatarosefromtheshareshefrequentlyhadofcontributingtohisamusement,andsometimes,perhaps,tohighergratifications;forhenevercouldcontainthedelightofhearinghercommended,whichhehadthesatisfactionofhearingalmosteverydayofherlife。Theidea,therefore,oftheimmensehappinesssheshouldconveytoherfatherbyherconsenttothismatch,madeastrongimpressiononhermind。

  Again,theextremepietyofsuchanactofobedienceworkedveryforcibly,asshehadaverydeepsenseofreligion。Lastly,whenshereflectedhowmuchsheherselfwastosuffer,beingindeedtobecomelittlelessthanasacrifice,oramartyr,tofilialloveandduty,shefeltanagreeableticklinginacertainlittlepassion,whichthoughitbearsnoimmediateaffinityeithertoreligionorvirtue,isoftensokindastolendgreatassistanceinexecutingthepurposesofboth。

  Sophiawascharmedwiththecontemplationofsoheroicanaction,andbegantocomplimentherselfwithmuchprematureflattery,whenCupid,wholayhidinhermuff,suddenlycreptout,andlikePunchinelloinapuppet-show,kickedalloutbeforehim。Intruthforwescorntodeceiveourreader,ortovindicatethecharacterofourheroinebyascribingheractionstosupernaturalimpulsethethoughtsofherbelovedJones,andsomehopeshoweverdistantinwhichhewasveryparticularlyconcerned,immediatelydestroyedallwhichfiliallove,piety,andpridehad,withtheirjointendeavours,beenlabouringtobringabout。

  ButbeforeweproceedanyfartherwithSophia,wemustnowlookbacktoMr。Jones。

  Chapter10

  Containingseveralmatters,naturalenoughperhaps,butlowThereaderwillbepleasedtoremember,thatweleftMr。Jones,inthebeginningofthisbook,onhisroadtoBristol;beingdeterminedtoseekhisfortuneatsea,orrather,indeed,toflyawayfromhisfortuneonshore。

  Ithappenedathingnotveryunusual,thattheguidewhoundertooktoconducthimonhisway,wasunluckilyunacquaintedwiththeroad;

  sothathavingmissedhisrighttrack,andbeingashamedtoaskinformation,herambledaboutbackwardsandforwardstillnightcameon,anditbegantogrowdark。Jonessuspectingwhathadhappened,acquaintedtheguidewithhisapprehensions;butheinsistedonit,thattheywereintherightroad,andadded,itwouldbeverystrangeifheshouldnotknowtheroadtoBristol;though,inreality,itwouldhavebeenmuchstrangerifhehadknownit,havingneverpastthroughitinhislifebefore。

  Joneshadnotsuchimplicitfaithinhisguide,butthatontheirarrivalatavillageheinquiredofthefirstfellowhesaw,whethertheywereintheroadtoBristol。\"Whencedidyoucome?\"criesthefellow。\"Nomatter,\"saysJones,alittlehastily;\"IwanttoknowifthisbetheroadtoBristol?\"-\"TheroadtoBristol!\"criesthefellow,scratchinghishead:\"why,measter,IbelieveyouwillhardlygettoBristolthiswayto-night。\"-\"Prithee,friend,then,\"

  Anotherfellownowcameup,andaskedwhichwaythegentlemenweregoing;ofwhichbeinginformedbyJones,hefirstscratchedhishead,andthenleaninguponapolehehadinhishand,begantotellhim,\"Thathemustkeeptheright-handroadforaboutamile,oramileandahalf,orsuchamatter,andthenhemustturnshorttotheleft,whichwouldbringhimroundbyMeasterJinBearnes’s。\"-

  ButwhichisMr。JohnBearnes’s?\"saysJones。\"OLord!\"criesthefellow,\"why,don’tyouknowMeasterJinBearnes?Whencethendidyoucome?\"

  ThesetwofellowshadalmostconqueredthepatienceofJones,whenaplainwell-lookingmanwhowasindeedaQuakeraccostedhimthus:

  Thelandlord,whowasaverycivilfellow,toldJones,\"Hehopedhewouldexcusethebadnessofhisaccommodation;forthathiswifewasgonefromhome,andhadlockedupalmosteverything,andcarriedthekeysalongwithher。\"Indeedthefactwas,thatafavouritedaughterofherswasjustmarried,andgonethatmorninghomewithherhusband;andthatsheandhermothertogetherhadalmoststriptthepoormanofallhisgoods,aswellasmoney;forthoughhehadseveralchildren,hisdaughteronly,whowasthemother’sfavourite,wastheobjectofherconsideration;andtothehumourofthisonechildshewouldwithpleasurehavesacrificedalltherest,andherhusbandintothebargain。

  ThoughJoneswasveryunfitforanykindofcompany,andwouldhavepreferredbeingalone,yethecouldnotresisttheimportunitiesofthehonestQuaker;whowasthemoredesirousofsittingwithhim,fromhavingremarkedthemelancholywhichappearedbothinhiscountenanceandbehaviour;andwhichthepoorQuakerthoughthisconversationmightinsomemeasurerelieve。

  Aftertheyhadpastsometimetogether,insuchamannerthatmyhonestfriendmighthavethoughthimselfatoneofhissilentmeetings,theQuakerbegantobemovedbysomespiritorother,probablythatofcuriosity,andsaid,\"Friend,Iperceivesomesaddisasterhathbefallenthee;butpraybeofcomfort。Perhapsthouhastlostafriend。Ifso,thoumustconsiderweareallmortal。Andwhyshouldestthougrieve,whenthouknowestthygriefwilldothyfriendnogood?Weareallborntoaffliction。Imyselfhavemysorrowsaswellasthee,andmostprobablygreatersorrows。ThoughI

  haveaclearestateofL100ayear,whichisasmuchasIwant,andIhaveaconscience,IthanktheLord,voidofoffence;myconstitutionissoundandstrong,andthereisnomancandemandadebtofme,noraccusemeofaninjury;yet,friend,Ishouldbeconcernedtothinktheeasmiserableasmyself。\"

  HeretheQuakerendedwithadeepsigh;andJonespresentlyanswered,\"Iamverysorry,sir,foryourunhappiness,whateveristheoccasionofit。\"-\"Ah!friend,\"repliedtheQuaker,\"oneonlydaughteristheoccasion;onewhowasmygreatestdelightuponearth,andwhowithinthisweekisrunawayfromme,andismarriedagainstmyconsent。Ihadprovidedherapropermatch,asobermanandoneofsubstance;butshe,forsooth,wouldchuseforherself,andawaysheisgonewithayoungfellownotworthagroat。Ifshehadbeendead,asIsupposethyfriendis,Ishouldhavebeenhappy。\"-\"Thatisverystrange,sir,\"saidJones。\"Why,woulditnotbebetterforhertobedead,thantobeabeggar?\"repliedtheQuaker:\"for,asI

  ThesubjectoftheQuaker’sdiscoursehadsodeeplyaffectedJones,thathestaredverywildlyallthetimewasspeaking。ThistheQuakerhadobserved,andthis,addedtotherestofhisbehaviour,inspiredhonestBroadbrimwithaconceit,thathiscompanionwasinrealityoutofhissenses。Insteadofresentingtheaffront,therefore,theQuakerwasmovedwithcompassionforhisunhappycircumstances;andhavingcommunicatedhisopiniontothelandlord,hedesiredhimtotakegreatcareofhisguest,andtotreathimwiththehighestcivility。

  \"Indeed,\"saysthelandlord,\"Ishallusenosuchcivilitytowardshim;foritseems,forallhislacedwaistcoatthere,heisnomoreagentlemanthanmyself,butapoorparishbastard,bredupatagreatsquire’saboutthirtymilesoff,andnowturnedoutofdoorsnotforanygoodtobesure。Ishallgethimoutofmyhouseassoonaspossible。IfIdolosemyreckoning,thefirstlossisalwaysthebest。ItisnotaboveayearagothatIlostasilverspoon。\"

  \"Whatdostthoutalkofaparishbastard,Robin?\"answeredtheQuaker。\"Thoumustcertainlybemistakeninthyman。\"

  \"Notatall,\"repliedRobin;\"theguide,whoknowshimverywell,tolditme。\"For,indeed,theguidehadnosoonertakenhisplaceatthekitchenfire,thanheacquaintedthewholecompanywithallhekneworhadeverheardconcerningJones。

  TheQuakerwasnosoonerassuredbythisfellowofthebirthandlowfortuneofJones,thanallcompassionforhimvanished;andthehonestplainmanwenthomefiredwithnolessindignationthanadukewouldhavefeltatreceivinganaffrontfromsuchaperson。

  Thelandlordhimselfconceivedanequaldisdainforhisguest;sothatwhenJonesrungthebellinordertoretiretobed,hewasacquaintedthathecouldhavenobedthere。Besidesdisdainofthemeanconditionofhisguest,Robinentertainedviolentsuspicionofhisintentions,whichwere,hesupposed,towatchsomefavourableopportunityofrobbingthehouse。Inreality,hemighthavebeenverywelleasedoftheseapprehensions,bytheprudentprecautionsofhiswifeanddaughter,whohadalreadyremovedeverythingwhichwasnotfixedtothefreehold;buthewasbynaturesuspicious,andhadbeenmoreparticularlysosincethelossofhisspoon。Inshort,thedreadofbeingrobbedtotallyabsorbedthecomfortableconsiderationthathehadnothingtolose。

  Jonesbeingassuredthathecouldhavenobed,verycontentedlybetookhimselftoagreatchairmadewithrushes,whensleep,whichhadlatelyshunnedhiscompanyinmuchbetterapartments,generouslypaidhimavisitinhishumblecell。

  Asforthelandlord,hewaspreventedbyhisfearsfromretiringtorest。Hereturnedthereforetothekitchenfire,whencehecouldsurveytheonlydoorwhichopenedintotheparlour,orratherhole,whereJoneswasseated,andasforthewindowtothatroom,itwasimpossibleforanycreaturelargerthanacattohavemadehisescapethroughit。

  Chapter11

  TheadventureofacompanyofsoldiersThelandlordhavingtakenhisseatdirectlyoppositetothedooroftheparlour,determinedtokeepguardtherethewholenight。Theguideandanotherfellowremainedlongondutywithhim,thoughtheyneitherknewhissuspicions,norhadanyoftheirown。Thetruecauseoftheirwatchingdid,indeed,atlength,putanendtoit;

  forthiswasnootherthanthestrengthandgoodnessofthebeer,ofwhichhavingtippledaverylargequantity,theygrewatfirstverynoisyandvociferous,andafterwardsfellbothasleep。

  ButitwasnotinthepowerofliquortocomposethefearsofRobin。

  Hecontinuedstillwakinginhischair,withhiseyesfixedstedfastlyonthedoorwhichledintotheapartmentofMr。Jones,tillaviolentthunderingathisoutwardgatecalledhimfromhisseat,andobligedhimtoopenit;whichhehadnosoonerdone,thanhiskitchenwasimmediatelyfullofgentlemeninredcoats,whoallrusheduponhiminastumultuousamannerasiftheyintendedtotakehislittlecastlebystorm。

  Thelandlordwasnowforcedfromhisposttofurnishhisnumerousguestswithbeer,whichtheycalledforwithgreateagerness;anduponhissecondorthirdreturnfromthecellar,hesawMr。Jonesstandingbeforethefireinthemidstofthesoldiers;foritmayeasilybebelieved,thatthearrivalofsomuchgoodcompanyshouldputanendtoanysleep,unlessthatfromwhichwearetobeawakenedonlybythelasttrumpet。

  Thecompanyhavingnowprettywellsatisfiedtheirthirst,nothingremainedbuttopaythereckoning,acircumstanceoftenproductiveofmuchmischiefanddiscontentamongtheinferiorrankofgentry,whoareapttofindgreatdifficultyinassessingthesum,withexactregardtodistributivejustice,whichdirectsthateverymanshallpayaccordingtothequantitywhichhedrinks。Thisdifficultyoccurreduponthepresentoccasion;anditwasthegreater,assomegentlemenhad,intheirextremehurry,marchedoff,aftertheirfirstdraught,andhadentirelyforgottocontributeanythingtowardsthesaidreckoning。

  Aviolentdisputenowarose,inwhicheverywordmaybesaidtohavebeendeposeduponoath;fortheoathswereatleastequaltoalltheotherwordsspoken。Inthiscontroversythewholecompanyspoketogether,andeverymanseemedwhollybenttoextenuatethesumwhichfelltohisshare;sothatthemostprobableconclusionwhichcouldbeforeseenwas,thatalargeportionofthereckoningwouldfalltothelandlord’ssharetopay,orwhatismuchthesamethingwouldremainunpaid。

  AllthiswhileMr。Joneswasengagedinconversationwiththeserjeant;forthatofficerwasentirelyunconcernedinthepresentdispute,beingprivilegedbyimmemorialcustomfromallcontribution。

  Thedisputenowgrewsoverywarmthatitseemedtodrawtowardsamilitarydecision,whenJones,steppingforward,silencedalltheirclamoursatonce,bydeclaringthathewouldpaythewholereckoning,whichindeedamountedtonomorethanthreeshillingsandfourpence。

  ThisdeclarationprocuredJonesthethanksandapplauseofthewholecompany。Thetermshonourable,noble,andworthygentleman,resoundedthroughtheroom;nay,mylandlordhimselfbegantohaveabetteropinionofhim,andalmosttodisbelievetheaccountwhichtheguidehadgiven。

  TheserjeanthadinformedMr。Jonesthattheyweremarchingagainsttherebels,andexpectedtobecommandedbythegloriousDukeofCumberland。Bywhichthereadermayperceiveacircumstancewhichwehavenotthoughtnecessarytocommunicatebeforethatthiswastheverytimewhenthelaterebellionwasatthehighest;andindeedthebandittiwerenowmarchedintoEngland,intending,asitwasthought,tofighttheking’sforces,andtoattemptpushingforwardtothemetropolis。

  Joneshadsomeheroicingredientsinhiscomposition,andwasaheartywell-wishertothegloriouscauseofliberty,andoftheProtestantreligion。Itisnowonder,therefore,thatincircumstanceswhichwouldhavewarrantedamuchmoreromanticandwildundertaking,itshouldoccurtohimtoserveasavolunteerinthisexpedition。

  Ourcommandingofficerhadsaidallinhispowertoencourageandpromotethisgooddisposition,fromthefirstmomenthehadbeenacquaintedwithit。Henowproclaimedthenobleresolutionaloud,whichwasreceivedwithgreatpleasurebythewholecompany,whoallcriedout,\"GodblessKingGeorgeandyourhonour\";andthenadded,withmanyoaths,\"Wewillstandbyyoubothtothelastdropsofourblood。\"

  Thegentlemanwhohadbeenallnighttipplingattheale-house,wasprevailedonbysomeargumentswhichacorporalhadputintohishands,toundertakethesameexpedition。AndnowtheportmanteaubelongingtoMr。Jonesbeingputupinthebaggage-cart,theforceswereabouttomoveforwards;whentheguide,steppinguptoJones,said,\"Sir,Ihopeyouwillconsiderthatthehorseshavebeenkeptoutallnight,andwehavetravelledagreatwaysoutofourway。\"

  Joneswassurprizedattheimpudenceofthisdemand,andacquaintedthesoldierswiththemeritsofhiscause,whowereallunanimousincondemningtheguideforhisendeavourstoputuponagentleman。

  Somesaid,heoughttobetiedneckandheels;othersthathedeservedtorunthegantlope;andtheserjeantshookhiscaneathim,andwishedhehadhimunderhiscommand,swearingheartilyhewouldmakeanexampleofhim。

  Jonescontentedhimselfhoweverwithanegativepunishment,andwalkedoffwithhisnewcomrades,leavingtheguidetothepoorrevengeofcursingandrevilinghim;inwhichlatterthelandlordjoined,saying,\"Ay,ay,heisapureone,Iwarrantyou。Aprettygentleman,indeed,togoforasoldier!Heshallwearalacedwaistcoattruly。Itisanoldproverbandatrueone,allisnotgoldthatglisters。Iamgladmyhouseiswellridofhim。\"

  Allthatdaytheserjeantandtheyoungsoldiermarchedtogether;

  andtheformer,whowasanarchfellow,toldthelattermanyentertainingstoriesofhiscampaigns,thoughinrealityhehadnevermadeany;forhewasbutlatelycomeintotheservice,andhad,byhisowndexterity,sowellingratiatedhimselfwithhisofficers,thathehadpromotedhimselftoahalberd;chieflyindeedbyhismeritinrecruiting,inwhichhewasmostexcellentlywellskilled。

  Muchmirthandfestivitypassedamongthesoldiersduringtheirmarch。Inwhichthemanyoccurrencesthathadpassedattheirlastquarterswereremembered,andeveryone,withgreatfreedom,madewhatjokeshepleasedonhisofficers,someofwhichwereofthecoarserkind,andverynearborderingonscandal。Thisbroughttoourheroe’smindthecustomwhichhehadreadofamongtheGreeksandRomans,ofindulging,oncertainfestivalsandsolemnoccasions,thelibertytoslaves,ofusinganuncontrouledfreedomofspeechtowardstheirmasters。

  Ourlittlearmy,whichconsistedoftwocompaniesoffoot,werenowarrivedattheplacewheretheyweretohaltthatevening。Theserjeantthenacquaintedhislieutenant,whowasthecommandingofficer,thattheyhadpickeduptwofellowsinthatday’smarch,oneofwhich,hesaid,wasasfineamanaseverhesawmeaningthetippler,forthathewasnearsixfeet,wellproportioned,andstronglylimbed;andtheothermeaningJoneswoulddowellenoughfortherearrank。

  Thenewsoldierswerenowproducedbeforetheofficer,whohavingexaminedthesix-feetman,hebeingfirstproduced,camenexttosurveyJones:atthefirstsightofwhom,thelieutenantcouldnothelpshowingsomesurprize;forbesidesthathewasverywelldressed,andwasnaturallygenteel,hehadaremarkableairofdignityinhislook,whichisrarelyseenamongthevulgar,andisindeednotinseparablyannexedtothefeaturesoftheirsuperiors。

  Jonesanswered:\"Thathehadnotmentionedanythingofenlistinghimself;thathewasmostzealouslyattachedtothegloriouscauseforwhichtheyweregoingtofight,andwasverydesirousofservingasavolunteer;\"concludingwithsomecomplimentstothelieutenant,andexpressingthegreatsatisfactionheshouldhaveinbeingunderhiscommand。

  Thelieutenantreturnedhiscivility,commendedhisresolution,shookhimbythehand,andinvitedhimtodinewithhimselfandtherestoftheofficers。

  TheadventureofacompanyofofficersThelieutenant,whomwementionedintheprecedingchapter,andwhocommandedthisparty,wasnownearsixtyyearsofage。Hehadenteredveryyoungintothearmy,andhadservedinthecapacityofanensignatthebattleofTannieres;herehehadreceivedtwowounds,andhadsowelldistinguishedhimself,thathewasbytheDukeofMarlboroughadvancedtobealieutenant,immediatelyafterthatbattle。

  Inthiscommissionhehadcontinuedeversince,viz。,nearfortyyears;duringwhichtimehehadseenvastnumberspreferredoverhishead,andhadnowthemortificationtobecommandedbyboys,whosefatherswereatnursewhenhefirstenteredintotheservice。

  Norwasthisillsuccessinhisprofessionsolelyowingtohishavingnofriendsamongthemeninpower。Hehadthemisfortunetoincurthedispleasureofhiscolonel,whoformanyyearscontinuedinthecommandofthisregiment。Nordidheowetheimplacableill-willwhichthismanborehimtoanyneglectordeficiencyasanofficer,norindeedtoanyfaultinhimself;butsolelytotheindiscretionofhiswife,whowasaverybeautifulwoman,andwho,thoughshewasremarkablyfondofherhusband,wouldnotpurchasehisprefermentattheexpenseofcertainfavourswhichthecolonelrequiredofher。

  Thepoorlieutenantwasmorepeculiarlyunhappyinthis,thatwhilehefelttheeffectsoftheenmityofhiscolonel,heneitherknew,norsuspected,thathereallyborehimany;forhecouldnotsuspectanill-willforwhichhewasnotconsciousofgivinganycause;andhiswife,fearingwhatherhusband’sniceregardtohishonourmighthaveoccasioned,contentedherselfwithpreservinghervirtuewithoutenjoyingthetriumphsofherconquest。

  ThisunfortunateofficerforsoIthinkhemaybecalledhadmanygoodqualitiesbesideshismeritinhisprofession;forhewasareligious,honest,good-naturedman;andhadbehavedsowellinhiscommand,thathewashighlyesteemedandbelovednotonlybythesoldiersofhisowncompany,butbythewholeregiment。

  TheotherofficerswhomarchedwithhimwereaFrenchlieutenant,whohadbeenlongenoughoutofFrancetoforgethisownlanguage,butnotlongenoughinEnglandtolearnours,sothathereallyspokenolanguageatall,andcouldbarelymakehimselfunderstoodonthemostordinaryoccasions。Therewerelikewisetwoensigns,bothveryyoungfellows;oneofwhomhadbeenbredunderanattorney,andtheotherwassontothewifeofanobleman’sbutler。

  Assoonasdinnerwasended,Jonesinformedthecompanyofthemerrimentwhichhadpassedamongthesoldiersupontheirmarch;\"andyet,\"sayshe,\"notwithstandingalltheirvociferation,IdaresweartheywillbehavemorelikeGreciansthanTrojanswhentheycometotheenemy。\"-\"GreciansandTrojans!\"saysoneoftheensigns,\"whothedevilarethey?IhaveheardofallthetroopsinEurope,butneverofanysuchasthese。\"

  NorthertondidnotverywellrelishthesarcasmofJones;buthethoughttheprovocationwasscarcesufficienttojustifyablow,orarascal,orscoundrel,whichweretheonlyreparteesthatsuggestedthemselves。Hewas,therefore,silentatpresent;butresolvedtotakethefirstopportunityofreturningthejestbyabuse。

  ItnowcametotheturnofMr。Jonestogiveatoast,asitiscalled;whocouldnotrefrainfrommentioninghisdearSophia。Thishedidthemorereadily,asheimagineditutterlyimpossiblethatanyonepresentshouldguessthepersonhemeant。

  Butthelieutenant,whowasthetoast-master,wasnotcontentedwithSophiaonly。Hesaid,hemusthavehersir-name;uponwhichJoneshesitatedalittle,andpresentlyafternamedMissSophiaWestern。

  Thetendernessofloverscanillbrooktheleastjestingwiththenamesoftheirmistresses。However,Jones,thoughhehadenoughoftheloverandoftheheroetooinhisdisposition,didnotresenttheseslandersashastilyas,perhaps,heoughttohavedone。Tosaythetruth,havingseenbutlittleofthiskindofwit,hedidnotreadilyunderstandit,andforalongtimeimaginedMr。Northertonhadreallymistakenhischarmerforsomeother。Butnow,turningtotheensignwithasternaspect,hesaid,\"Pray,sir,chusesomeothersubjectforyourwit;forIpromiseyouIwillbearnojestingwiththislady’scharacter。\"\"Jesting!\"criestheother,\"d——nmeifeverIwasmoreinearnestinmylife。TomFrenchofourregimenthadbothherandherauntatBath。\"\"ThenImusttellyouinearnest,\"

  Hehadnosoonerspokenthesewords,thantheensign,togetherwithavolleyofcurses,dischargedabottlefullattheheadofJones,whichhittinghimalittleabovetherighttemple,broughthiminstantlytotheground。

  Theconquerorperceivingtheenemytoliemotionlessbeforehim,andbloodbeginningtoflowprettyplentifullyfromhiswound,begannowtothinkofquittingthefieldofbattle,wherenomorehonourwastobegotten;butthelieutenantinterposed,bysteppingbeforethedoor,andthuscutoffhisretreat。

  Northertonwasveryimportunatewiththelieutenantforhisliberty;

  urgingtheillconsequencesofhisstay,askinghim,whathecouldhavedoneless?\"Zounds!\"sayshe,\"Iwasbutinjestwiththefellow。

  IneverheardanyharmofMissWesterninmylife。\"\"Havenotyou?\"

  saidthelieutenant;\"thenyourichlydeservetobehanged,aswellformakingsuchjests,asforusingsuchaweapon:youaremyprisoner,sir;norshallyoustirfromhencetillaproperguardcomestosecureyou。\"

  Suchanascendanthadourlieutenantoverthisensign,thatallthatfervencyofcouragewhichhadlevelledourpoorheroewiththefloor,wouldscarcehaveanimatedthesaidensigntohavedrawnhisswordagainstthelieutenant,hadhethenhadonedanglingathisside:butalltheswordsbeinghungupintheroom,were,attheverybeginningofthefray,securedbytheFrenchofficer。SothatMr。

  Northertonwasobligedtoattendthefinalissueofthisaffair。

  TheFrenchgentlemanandMr。Adderly,atthedesireoftheircommandingofficer,hadraisedupthebodyofJones,butastheycouldperceivebutlittleifanysignoflifeinhim,theyagainlethimfall,Adderlydamninghimforhavingbloodedhiswaistcoat;andtheFrenchmandeclaring,\"Begar,menotushtheEnglisemandemort:mehavehearddeEngliseley,law,whatyoucall,hangupdemandattushhimlast。\"

  Whenthegoodlieutenantappliedhimselftothedoor,heappliedhimselflikewisetothebell;andthedrawerimmediatelyattending,hedispatchedhimforafileofmusqueteersandasurgeon。Thesecommands,togetherwiththedrawer’sreportofwhathehadhimselfseen,notonlyproducedthesoldiers,butpresentlydrewupthelandlordofthehouse,hiswife,andservants,and,indeed,everyoneelsewhohappenedatthattimetobeintheinn。

  Todescribeeveryparticular,andtorelatethewholeconversationoftheensuingscene,isnotwithinmypower,unlessIhadfortypens,andcould,atonce,writewiththemalltogether,asthecompanynowspoke。Thereadermust,therefore,contenthimselfwiththemostremarkableincidents,andperhapshemayverywellexcusetherest。

  ThefirstthingdonewassecuringthebodyofNortherton,whobeingdeliveredintothecustodyofsixmenwithacorporalattheirhead,wasbythemconductedfromaplacewhichhewasverywillingtoleave,butitwasunluckilytoaplacewhitherhewasveryunwillingtogo。Tosaythetruth,sowhimsicalarethedesiresofambition,theverymomentthisyouthhadattainedtheabove-mentionedhonour,hewouldhavebeenwellcontentedtohaveretiredtosomecorneroftheworld,wherethefameofitshouldneverhavereachedhisears。

  Itsurprizesus,andsoperhaps,itmaythereader,thatthelieutenant,aworthyandgoodman,shouldhaveappliedhischiefcare,rathertosecuretheoffender,thantopreservethelifeofthewoundedperson。Wementionthisobservation,notwithanyviewofpretendingtoaccountforsooddabehaviour,butlestsomecriticshouldhereafterplumehimselfondiscoveringit。Wewouldhavethesegentlemenknowwecanseewhatisoddincharactersaswellasthemselves,butitisourbusinesstorelatefactsastheyare;which,whenwehavedone,itisthepartofthelearnedandsagaciousreadertoconsultthatoriginalbookofnature,whenceeverypassageinourworkistranscribed,thoughwequotenotalwaystheparticularpageforitsauthority。

  Thecompanywhichnowarrivedwereofadifferentdisposition。

  Theysuspendedtheircuriosityconcerningthepersonoftheensign,tilltheyshouldseehimhereafterinamoreengagingattitude。Atpresent,theirwholeconcernandattentionwereemployedaboutthebloodyobjectonthefloor;whichbeingplaceduprightinachair,soonbegantodiscoversomesymptomsoflifeandmotion。ThesewerenosoonerperceivedbythecompanyforJoneswasatfirstgenerallyconcludedtobedeadthantheyallfellatoncetoprescribingforhimforasnoneofthephysicalorderwaspresent,everyonetheretookthatofficeuponhim。

  Bleedingwastheunanimousvoiceofthewholeroom;butunluckilytherewasnooperatorathand;everyonethencried,\"Callthebarber;\"butnonestirredastep。Severalcordialswaslikewiseprescribedinthesameineffectivemanner;tillthelandlordorderedupatankardofstrongbeer,withatoast,whichhesaidwasthebestcordialinEngland。

  Thepersonprincipallyassistantonthisoccasion,indeedtheonlyonewhodidanyservice,orseemedlikelytodoany,wasthelandlady:

  shecutoffsomeofherhair,andappliedittothewoundtostoptheblood;shefelltochafingtheyouth’stempleswithherhand;

  andhavingexprestgreatcontemptforherhusband’sprescriptionofbeer,shedespatchedoneofhermaidstoherownclosetforabottleofbrandy,ofwhich,assoonasitwasbrought,sheprevailedonJones,whowasjustreturnedtohissenses,todrinkaverylargeandplentifuldraught。

  Soonafterwardsarrivedthesurgeon,whohavingviewedthewound,havingshakenhishead,andblamedeverythingwhichwasdone,orderedhispatientinstantlytobed;inwhichplacewethinkpropertoleavehimsometimetohisrepose,andshallhere,therefore,putanendtothischapter。

  Amostdreadfulchapterindeed;andwhichfewreadersoughttoventureuponinanevening,especiallywhenaloneJonesswallowedalargemessofchicken,orrathercock,broth,withaverygoodappetite,asindeedhewouldhavedonethecockitwasmadeof,withapoundofbaconintothebargain;andnow,findinginhimselfnodeficiencyofeitherhealthorspirit,heresolvedtogetupandseekhisenemy。

  Butfirsthesentfortheserjeant,whowashisfirstacquaintanceamongthesemilitarygentlemen。Unluckilythatworthyofficerhaving,inaliteralsense,takenhisfillofliquor,hadbeensometimeretiredtohisbolster,wherehewassnoringsoloudthatitwasnoteasytoconveyanoiseinathisearscapableofdrowningthatwhichissuedfromhisnostrils。

  However,asJonespersistedinhisdesireofseeinghim,avociferousdraweratlengthfoundmeanstodisturbhisslumbers,andtoacquainthimwiththemessage。Ofwhichtheserjeantwasnosoonermadesensible,thanhearosefromhisbed,andhavinghisclothesalreadyon,immediatelyattended。Jonesdidnotthinkfittoacquainttheserjeantwithhisdesign;thoughhemighthavedoneitwithgreatsafety,forthehalberdierwashimselfamanofhonour,andhadkilledhisman。Hewouldthereforehavefaithfullykeptthissecret,orindeedanyotherwhichnorewardwaspublishedfordiscovering。ButasJonesknewnotthosevirtuesinsoshortanacquaintance,hiscautionwasperhapsprudentandcommendableenough。

  Whenthecentinelfirstsawourheroeapproach,hishairbegangentlytoliftuphisgrenadiercap;andinthesameinstanthiskneesfelltoblowswitheachother。Presentlyhiswholebodywasseizedwithworsethananaguefit。Hethenfiredhispiece,andfellflatonhisface。

  Jonesseeingthefellowfall,guessedthecauseofhisfright,atwhichhecouldnotforbearsmiling,notintheleastreflectingonthedangerfromwhichhehadjustescaped。Hethenpassedbythefellow,whostillcontinuedinthepostureinwhichhefell,andenteredtheroomwhereNortherton,ashehadheard,wasconfined。Here,inasolitarysituation,hefound-anemptyquartpotstandingonthetable,onwhichsomebeerbeingspilt,itlookedasiftheroomhadlatelybeeninhabited;butatpresentitwasentirelyvacant。

  Thecommanderoftheforces,andthecommanderofthehouse,werenowbotharrived;fortheformerbeingawakeatthetime,andhearingthecentinelfirehispiece,thoughtithisdutytoriseimmediately,thoughhehadnogreatapprehensionsofanymischief;

  whereastheapprehensionsofthelatterweremuchgreater,lestherspoonsandtankardsshouldbeuponthemarch,withouthavingreceivedanysuchordersfromher。

  Ourpoorcentinel,towhomthesightofthisofficerwasnotmuchmorewelcomethantheapparition,ashethoughtit,whichhehadseenbefore,againrelatedthedreadfulstory,andwithmanyadditionsofbloodandfire;buthehadthemisfortunetogainnocreditwitheitherofthelast-mentionedpersons:fortheofficer,thoughaveryreligiousman,wasfreefromallterrorsofthiskind;besides,havingsolatelyleftJonesintheconditionwehaveseen,hehadnosuspicionofhisbeingdead。Asforthelandlady,thoughnotoverreligious,shehadnokindofaversiontothedoctrineofspirits;buttherewasacircumstanceinthetalewhichshewellknewtobefalse,asweshallinformthereaderpresently。

  ButwhetherNorthertonwascarriedawayinthunderorfire,orinwhateverothermannerhewasgone,itwasnowcertainthathisbodywasnolongerincustody。Uponthisoccasionthelieutenantformedaconclusionnotverydifferentfromwhattheserjeantisjustmentionedtohavemadebefore,andimmediatelyorderedthecentineltobetakenprisoner。Sothat,byastrangereverseoffortunethoughnotveryuncommoninamilitarylife,theguardbecametheguarded。

  TheconclusionoftheforegoingadventureBesidesthesuspicionofsleep,thelieutenantharbouredanotherandworsedoubtagainstthepoorcentinel,andthiswas,thatoftreachery;forashebelievednotonesyllableoftheapparition,soheimaginedthewholetobeaninventionformedonlytoimposeuponhim,andthatthefellowhadinrealitybeenbribedbyNorthertontolethimescape。Andthisheimaginedtherather,asthefrightappearedtohimthemoreunnaturalinonewhohadthecharacterofasbraveandboldamanasanyintheregiment,havingbeeninseveralactions,havingreceivedseveralwounds,and,inaword,havingbehavedhimselfalwayslikeagoodandvaliantsoldier。

  Thatthereader,therefore,maynotconceivetheleastillopinionofsuchaperson,weshallnotdelayamomentinrescuinghischaracterfromtheimputationofthisguilt。

  Mr。Northertonthen,aswehavebeforeobserved,wasfullysatisfiedwiththeglorywhichhehadobtainedfromthisaction。Hehadperhapsseen,orheard,orguessed,thatenvyisapttoattendfame。

  Butlestourreaders,ofadifferentcomplexion,shouldtakethisoccasionoftoohastilycondemningallcompassionasafolly,andpernicioustosociety,wethinkpropertomentionanotherparticularwhichmightpossiblyhavesomelittleshareinthisaction。Theensignhappenedtobeatthistimepossessedofthesumoffiftypounds,whichdidindeedbelongtothewholecompany;forthecaptainhavingquarrelledwithhislieutenant,hadentrustedthepaymentofhiscompanytotheensign。Thismoney,however,hethoughtpropertodepositinmylandlady’shand,possiblybywayofbailorsecuritythathewouldhereafterappearandanswertothechargeagainsthim;

  butwhateverweretheconditions,certainitis,thatshehadthemoneyandtheensignhisliberty。
