BeingofamuchmoretempestuouskindthantheformerBeforeweproceedwithwhatnowhappenedtoourlovers,itmaybepropertorecountwhathadpastinthehallduringtheirtenderinterview。
SoonafterJoneshadleftMr。Westerninthemannerabovementioned,hissistercametohim,andwaspresentlyinformedofallthathadpassedbetweenherbrotherandSophiarelatingtoBlifil。
ThisbehaviourinherniecethegoodladyconstruedtobeanabsolutebreachoftheconditiononwhichshehadengagedtokeepherloveforMr。Jonesasecret。Sheconsideredherself,therefore,atfulllibertytorevealallsheknewtothesquire,whichsheimmediatelydidinthemostexplicitterms,andwithoutanyceremonyorpreface。
TheideaofamarriagebetweenJonesandhisdaughter,hadneveronceenteredintothesquire’shead,eitherinthewarmestminutesofhisaffectiontowardsthatyoungman,orfromsuspicion,oronanyotheroccasion。Hedidindeedconsideraparityoffortuneandcircumstancestobephysicallyasnecessaryaningredientinmarriage,asdifferenceofsexes,oranyotheressential;andhadnomoreapprehensionofhisdaughter’sfallinginlovewithapoorman,thanwithanyanimalofadifferentspecies。
Hebecame,therefore,likeonethunderstruckathissister’srelation。Hewas,atfirst,incapableofmakinganyanswer,havingbeenalmostdeprivedofhisbreathbytheviolenceofthesurprize。
This,however,soonreturned,and,asisusualinothercasesafteranintermission,withredoubledforceandfury。
Thefirstusehemadeofthepowerofspeech,afterhisrecoveryfromthesuddeneffectsofhisastonishment,wastodischargearoundvolleyofoathsandimprecations。Afterwhichheproceededhastilytotheapartmentwhereheexpectedtofindthelovers,andmurmured,orratherindeedroaredforth,intentionsofrevengeeverystephewent。
Aswhentwodoves,ortwowood-pigeons,oraswhenStrephonandPhyllisforthatcomesnearesttothemarkareretiredintosomepleasantsolitarygrove,toenjoythedelightfulconversationofLove,thatbashfulboy,whocannotspeakinpublic,andisneveragoodcompaniontomorethantwoatatime;here,whileeveryobjectisserene,shouldhoarsethunderburstsuddenlythroughtheshatteredclouds,andrumblingrollalongthesky,thefrightenedmaidstartsfromthemossybankorverdantturf,thepaleliveryofdeathsucceedstheredregimentalsinwhichLovehadbeforedresthercheeks,fearshakesherwholeframe,andherloverscarcesupportshertremblingtotteringlimbs。
Oraswhentwogentlemen,strangerstothewondrouswitoftheplace,arecrackingabottletogetheratsomeinnortavernatSalisbury,ifthegreatDowdy,whoactsthepartofamadmanaswellassomeofhissetters-ondothatofafool,shouldrattlehischains,anddreadfullyhumforththegrumblingcatchalongthegallery;thefrightedstrangersstandaghast;scaredatthehorridsound,theyseeksomeplaceofshelterfromtheapproachingdanger;andifthewell-barredwindowsdidadmittheirexit,wouldventuretheirneckstoescapethethreateningfurynowcominguponthem。
SotrembledpoorSophia,soturnedshepaleatthenoiseofherfather,who,inavoicemostdreadfultohear,cameonswearing,cursing,andvowingthedestructionofJones。Tosaythetruth,I
believetheyouthhimselfwould,fromsomeprudentconsiderations,havepreferredanotherplaceofabodeatthistime,hadhisterroronSophia’saccountgivenhimlibertytoreflectamomentonwhatanyotherwaysconcernedhimself,thanashislovemadehimpartakewhateveraffectedher。
Andnowthesquire,havingburstopenthedoor,beheldanobjectwhichinstantlysuspendedallhisfuryagainstJones;thiswastheghastlyappearanceofSophia,whohadfaintedawayinherlover’sarms。ThistragicalsightMr。Westernnosoonerbeheld,thanallhisrageforsookhim;heroaredforhelpwithhisutmostviolence;ranfirsttohisdaughter,thenbacktothedoorcallingforwater,andthenbackagaintoSophia,neverconsideringinwhosearmsshethenwas,norperhapsoncerecollectingthattherewassuchapersonintheworldasJones;forindeedIbelievethepresentcircumstancesofhisdaughterwerenowthesoleconsiderationwhichemployedhisthoughts。

Thesquire,perhaps,didnotunderstandthisgoodadvice,asitwasdeliveredinobscurehints,shrugs,andnotesofadmiration:atleast,ifhedidunderstandit,heprofitedverylittlebyit;fornosoonerwashecuredofhisimmediatefearsforhisdaughter,thanherelapsedintohisformerfrenzy,whichmusthaveproducedanimmediatebattlewithJones,hadnotparsonSupple,whowasaverystrongman,beenpresent,andbymereforcerestrainedthesquirefromactsofhostility。

Allusionstothispartarelikewiseoftenmadeforthesakeofthejest。Andhere,Ibelieve,thewitisgenerallymisunderstood。Inreality,itliesindesiringanothertokissyoura——forhavingjustbeforethreatenedtokickhis;forIhaveobservedveryaccurately,thatnooneeverdesiresyoutokickthatwhichbelongstohimself,norofferstokissthispartinanother。
Itmaylikewiseseemsurprizingthatinthemanythousandkindinvitationsofthissort,whicheveryonewhohathconversedwithcountrygentlemenmusthaveheard,noone,Ibelieve,hatheverseenasingleinstancewherethedesirehathbeencompliedwith;-agreatinstanceoftheirwantofpoliteness;forintownnothingcanbemorecommonthanforthefinestgentlementoperformthisceremonyeverydaytotheirsuperiors,withouthavingthatfavouroncerequestedofthem。
Toallsuchwit,Jonesverycalmlyanswered,\"Sir,thisusagemayperhapscanceleveryotherobligationyouhaveconferredonme;butthereisoneyoucannevercancel;norwillIbeprovokedbyyourabusetoliftmyhandagainstthefatherofSophia。\"

Thesquiretooknonoticeofthisstory,norperhapsofanythinghesaid;forheinterruptedhimbeforehehadfinished,bycallingforatankardofbeer;observingwhichisperhapsastrueasanyobservationonthisfeverofthemindthatangermakesamandry。
NosoonerhadthesquireswallowedalargedraughtthanherenewedthediscourseonJones,anddeclaredaresolutionofgoingthenextmorningearlytoacquaintMr。Allworthy。Hisfriendwouldhavedissuadedhimfromthis,fromthemeremotiveofgood-nature;buthisdissuasionhadnoothereffectthantoproducealargevolleyofoathsandcurses,whichgreatlyshockedthepiousearsofSupple;

ThebehaviourofSophiaonthepresentoccasion;whichnoneofhersexwillblame,whoarecapableofbehavinginthesamemanner。AndthediscussionofaknottypointinthecourtofconscienceSophiahadpassedthelasttwenty-fourhoursinnoverydesirablemanner。Duringalargepartofthemshehadbeenentertainedbyherauntwithlecturesofprudence,recommendingtohertheexampleofthepoliteworld,wherelovesothegoodladysaidisatpresententirelylaughedat,andwherewomenconsidermatrimony,asmendoofficesofpublictrust,onlyasthemeansofmakingtheirfortunes,andofadvancingthemselvesintheworld。IncommentingonwhichtextMrs。Westernhaddisplayedhereloquenceduringseveralhours。
Thesesagaciouslectures,thoughlittlesuitedeithertothetasteorinclinationofSophia,were,however,lessirksometoherthanherownthoughts,thatformedtheentertainmentofthenight,duringwhichsheneveronceclosedhereyes。
