Butwhathasbeentheutilityofthoseschools？Whatscienceisthereatthisdayacquiredbytheirreadingsanddisputings？Thatwehaveofgeometry，whichisthemotherofallnaturalscience，wearenotindebtedforittotheschools。Plato，thatwasthebestphilosopheroftheGreeks，forbadeentranceintohisschooltoallthatwerenotalreadyinsomemeasuregeometricians。Thereweremanythatstudiedthatsciencetothegreatadvantageofmankind：butthereisnomentionoftheirschools；norwasthereanysectofgeometricians；nordidtheythenpassunderthenameofphilosophers。Thenaturalphilosophyofthoseschoolswasratheradreamthanscience，andsetforthinsenselessandinsignificantlanguage，whichcannotbeavoidedbythosethatwillteachphilosophywithouthavingfirstattainedgreatknowledgeingeometry。Fornatureworkethbymotion；thewaysanddegreeswhereofcannotbeknownwithouttheknowledgeoftheproportionsandpropertiesoflinesandfigures。Theirmoralphilosophyisbutadescriptionoftheirownpassions。Fortheruleofmanners，withoutcivilgovernment，isthelawofnature；andinit，thelawcivil，thatdeterminethwhatishonestanddishonest；whatisjustandunjust；andgenerallywhatisgoodandevil。Whereastheymaketherulesofgoodandbadbytheirownlikinganddisliking；bywhichmeans，insogreatdiversityoftaste，thereisnothinggenerallyagreedon；buteveryonedoth，asfarashedares，whatsoeverseemethgoodinhisowneyes，tothesubversionofCommonwealth。Theirlogic，whichshouldbethemethodofreasoning，isnothingelsebutcaptionsofwords，andinventionshowtopuzzlesuchasshouldgoabouttoposethem。Toconclude，thereisnothingsoabsurdthattheoldphilosophersasCicerosaith，whowasoneofthemhavenotsomeofthemmaintained。
