ThecarryingaboutofimagesinprocessionisanotherrelicofthereligionoftheGreeksandRomans,fortheyalsocarriedtheiridolsfromplacetoplace,inakindofchariot,whichwaspeculiarlydedicatedtothatuse,whichtheLatinscalledthensa,andvehiculumDeorum;andtheimagewasplacedinaframe,orshrine,whichtheycalledferculum。Andthatwhichtheycalledpompaisthesamethatnowisnamedprocession;accordingwhereunto,amongstthedivinehonourswhichweregiventoJuliusCaesarbytheSenate,thiswasone,thatinthepomp,orprocession,attheCircaeangames,heshouldhavethensametferculum,asacredchariotandashrine;whichwasasmuchastobecarriedupanddownasagod,justasatthisdaythepopesarecarriedbySwitzersunderacanopy。
Totheseprocessionsalsobelongedthebearingofburningtorchesandcandlesbeforetheimagesofthegods,bothamongsttheGreeksandRomans。ForafterwardstheemperorsofRomereceivedthesamehonor;
aswereadofCaligula,thatathisreceptiontotheEmpirehewascarriedfromMisenumtoRomeinthemidstofathrongofpeople,thewaysbesetwithaltars,andbeastsforsacrifice,andburningtorches;
andofCaracalla,thatwasreceivedintoAlexandriawithincense,andwithcastingofflowers,anddadouchiais,thatis,withtorches;
fordadochoiweretheythatamongsttheGreekscarriedtorcheslightedintheprocessionsoftheirgods。Andinprocessoftimethedevoutbutignorantpeopledidmanytimeshonourtheirbishopswiththelikepompofwaxcandles,andtheimagesofourSaviourandthesaints,constantly,inthechurchitself。Andthuscameintheuseofwaxcandlesandwasalsoestablishedbysomeoftheancientcouncils。
