  Duringthepredatorystageproper,andespeciallyduringtheearlierstagesofthequasi-peaceabledevelopmentofindustrythatfollowsthepredatorystage,alifeofleisureisthereadiestandmostconclusiveevidenceofpecuniarystrength,andthereforeofsuperiorforce;providedalwaysthatthegentlemanofleisurecanliveinmanifesteaseandcomfort。Atthisstagewealthconsistschieflyofslaves,andthebenefitsaccruingfromthepossessionofrichesandpowertaketheformchieflyofpersonalserviceandtheimmediateproductsofpersonalservice。

  Conspicuousabstentionfromlabourthereforebecomestheconventionalmarkofsuperiorpecuniaryachievementandtheconventionalindexofreputability;andconversely,sinceapplicationtoproductivelabourisamarkofpovertyandsubjection,itbecomesinconsistentwithareputablestandinginthecommunity。Habitsofindustryandthrift,therefore,arenotuniformlyfurtheredbyaprevailingpecuniaryemulation。Onthecontrary,thiskindofemulationindirectlydiscountenancesparticipationinproductivelabour。Labourwouldunavoidablybecomedishonourable,asbeinganevidenceindecorousundertheancienttraditionhandeddownfromanearlierculturalstage。Theancienttraditionofthepredatorycultureisthatproductiveeffortistobeshunnedasbeingunworthyofable-bodiedmen。andthistraditionisreinforcedratherthansetasideinthepassagefromthepredatorytothequasi-peaceablemanneroflife。

  Eveniftheinstitutionofaleisureclasshadnotcomeinwiththefirstemergenceofindividualownership,byforceofthedishonourattachingtoproductiveemployment,itwouldinanycasehavecomeinasoneoftheearlyconsequencesofownership。

  Anditistoberemarkedthatwhiletheleisureclassexistedintheoryfromthebeginningofpredatoryculture,theinstitutiontakesonanewandfullermeaningwiththetransitionfromthepredatorytothenextsucceedingpecuniarystageofculture。Itisfromthistimefortha“leisureclass“infactaswellasintheory。Fromthispointdatestheinstitutionoftheleisureclassinitsconsummateform。
