  Buteventherule,ifconfinedtoSouthAmerica,oftreesflourishingonlyinaclimaterenderedhumidbyrain-bearingwinds,hasastronglymarkedexceptioninthecaseoftheFalklandIslands。Theseislands,situatedinthesamelatitudewithTierradelFuegoandonlybetweentwoandthreehundredmilesdistantfromit,havinganearlysimilarclimate,withageologicalformationalmostidentical,withfavourablesituationsandthesamekindofpeatysoil,yetcanboastoffewplantsdeservingeventhetitleofbushes;whilstinTierradelFuegoitisimpossibletofindanacreoflandnotcoveredbythedensestforest。Inthiscase,boththedirectionoftheheavygalesofwindandofthecurrentsoftheseaarefavourabletothetransportofseedsfromTierradelFuego,asisshownbythecanoesandtrunksoftreesdriftedfromthatcountry,andfrequentlythrownontheshoresoftheWesternFalkland。Henceperhapsitis,thattherearemanyplantsincommontothetwocountriesbutwithrespecttothetreesofTierradelFuego,evenattemptsmadetotransplantthemhavefailed。

  DuringourstayatMaldonadoIcollectedseveralquadrupeds,eightykindsofbirds,andmanyreptiles,includingninespeciesofsnakes。Oftheindigenousmammalia,theonlyonenowleftofanysize,whichiscommon,istheCervuscampestris。Thisdeerisexceedinglyabundant,ofteninsmallherds,throughoutthecountriesborderingthePlataandinNorthernPatagonia。

  Ifapersoncrawlingclosealongtheground,slowlyadvancestowardsaherd,thedeerfrequently,outofcuriosity,approachtoreconnoitrehim。
