  Insteadoftakingthewaywhichledtothestation,thechaisepursuedthewestwardroadtothemarket-town。

  Proceedinginthisdirection,thebacksofthepersonsinthevehiclewerenecessarilyturnedonGeoffrey,advancingbehindthemfromtheeastward。Hejustcarelesslynoticedtheshabbylittlechaise,andthenturnedoffnorthonhiswaytoWindygates。

  BythetimeArnoldwascomposedenoughtolookroundhim,thechaisehadtakenthecurveintheroadwhichwoundbehindthefarmhouse。Hereturned——faithfultotheengagementwhichhehadundertaken——tohispostbeforetheinclosure。Thechaisewasthenaspeckinthedistance。Inaminutemoreitwasaspeckoutofsight。
