  Heinstinctivelycheckedthenextquestionasitrosetohislips。TherewasasettleddefianceintheexpressionofGeoffrey’sface,whichArnoldwasquiteatalosstounderstand。

  Helookedlikeamanwhohadmadeuphismindtoconfrontanythingthatcouldhappen,andtocontradictanybodywhospoketohim。

  Arnoldrememberedhispromisetokeeptheinvestigationthenonfootasecretfromeverybody。Geoffrey’smannermadehim——unconsciouslytohimself——readierthanhemightotherwisehavebeentoconsiderGeoffreyasincludedinthegeneralprohibition。
