  Geoffreyhurried,witheagersteps,tothesummer-house。HeaddressedthegroombeforethemanhadtimetospeakWithhorroranddismayinhisface,heexclaimed:

  SirPatrickandArnoldlookedateachotherinblankamazement。

  Withoutawordtoanyoneofthethreepersonspresent,allsilentlylookingathim,Geoffreyconsultedhiswatch。Annehadtoldhimtowaithalfanhour,andtoassumethatshehadgoneifhefailedtohearfromherinthattime。Theintervalhadpassed——andnocommunicationofanysorthadreachedhim。Theflightfromthehousehadbeensafelyaccomplished。AnneSilvesterwas,atthatmoment,onherwaytothemountaininn。
