  Henceitisthattheprophetsoneandallprefacetheiraddressessoconfidently,’TheWordoftheLord,’or’ThussaiththeLord。’

  Theyhaveeventheaudacitytospeakinthefirstperson,asifJehovahhimselfwerespeaking。AsinIsaiah:’Hearkenuntome,OJacob,andIsraelmycalled;IamHe,IamtheFirst,Ialsoamthelast,’——andsoon。Thepersonalityoftheprophetsinksentirelyintothebackground;hefeelshimselfforthetimebeingthemouthpieceoftheAlmighty。”[325]

  Innoneofthesecasesistherevelationdistinctlymotor。InthecaseofJosephSmithwhohadpropheticrevelationsinnumerableinadditiontotherevealedtranslationofthegoldplateswhichresultedintheBookofMormon,althoughtheremayhavebeenamotorelement,theinspirationseemstohavebeenpredominantlysensorial。Hebeganhistranslationbytheaidofthe“peep-stones“whichhefound,orthoughtorsaidthathefound,withthegoldplates——apparentlyacaseof“crystalgazing。”Forsomeoftheotherrevelationsheusedthepeep-stones,butseemsgenerallytohaveaskedtheLordformoredirectinstruction。[329]
