  AfurthercontinuationAllworthytookanopportunity,whilsthewasinthechair,ofreadingtheletterfromJonestoSophia,whichWesterndeliveredhim;andthereweresomeexpressionsinitconcerninghimselfwhichdrewtearsfromhiseyes。AtlengthhearrivedatMr。Western’s,andwasintroducedtoSophia。

  Whenthefirstceremonieswerepast,andthegentlemanandladyhadtakentheirchairs,asilenceofsomeminutesensued;duringwhichthelatter,whohadbeenpreparedforthevisitbyherfather,satplayingwithherfan,andhadeverymarkofconfusionbothinhercountenanceandbehaviour。AtlengthAllworthy,whowashimselfalittledisconcerted,beganthus:\"Iamafraid,MissWestern,myfamilyhathbeentheoccasionofgivingyousomeuneasiness;towhich,I

  WhereinthehistorybeginstodrawtowardsaconclusionWhenAllworthyreturnedtohislodgings,heheardMr。Joneswasjustarrivedbeforehim。Hehurriedthereforeinstantlyintoanemptychamber,whitherheorderedMr。Jonestobebroughttohimalone。

  ItisimpossibletoconceiveamoretenderormovingscenethanthemeetingbetweentheuncleandnephewforMrs。Waters,asthereadermaywellsuppose,hadatherlastvisitdiscoveredtohimthesecretofhisbirth。Thefirstagoniesofjoywhichwerefeltonbothsidesareindeed,beyondmypowertodescribe:Ishallnotthereforeattemptit。AfterAllworthyhadraisedJonesfromhisfeet,wherehehadprostratedhimself,andreceivedhimintohisarms,\"Omychild!\"hecried,\"howhaveIbeentoblame!howhaveIinjuredyou!

  andhemayreflect,notwithoutsomemixtureofpleasure,onthedangershehathescaped;butvillany,myboy,whenoncediscovered,isirretrievable;thestainswhichthisleavesbehind,notimewillwashaway。Thecensuresofmankindwillpursuethewretch,theirscornwillabashhiminpublick;andifshamedriveshimintoretirement,hewillgotoitwithallthoseterrorswithwhichawearychild,whoisafraidofhobgoblins,retreatsfromcompanytogotobedalone。

  ThehistorydrawsnearertoaconclusionWhenMr。Westernwasdeparted,JonesbegantoinformMr。AllworthyandMrs。Millerthathislibertyhadbeenprocuredbytwolords,who,togetherwithtwosurgeonsandafriendofMr。Nightingale’s,hadattendedthemagistratebywhomhehadbeencommitted,andbywhom,onthesurgeons’oaths,thatthewoundedpersonwasoutofallmannerofdangerfromhiswound,hewasdischarged。

  Oneonlyoftheselords,hesaid,hehadeverseenbefore,andthatnomorethanonce;buttheotherhadgreatlysurprizedhim,byaskinghispardonforanoffencehehadbeenguiltyoftowardshim,occasioned,hesaid,entirelybyhisignorancewhohewas。

  Nowtherealityofthecase,withwhichJoneswasnotacquaintedtillafterwards,wasthis:-ThelieutenantwhomLordFellamarhademployed,accordingtotheadviceofLadyBellaston,topressJonesasavagabondintothesea-service,whenhecametoreporttohislordshiptheeventwhichwehavebeforeseen,spokeveryfavourablyofthebehaviourofMr。Jonesonallaccounts,andstronglyassuredthatlordthathemusthavemistakentheperson,forthatJoneswascertainlyagentleman;insomuchthathislordship,whowasstrictlyamanofhonour,andwouldbynomeanshavebeenguiltyofanactionwhichtheworldingeneralwouldhavecondemned,begantobemuchconcernedfortheadvicewhichhehadtaken。

  Withinadayortwoafterthis,LordFellamarhappenedtodinewiththeIrishpeer,who,inaconversationupontheduel,acquaintedhiscompanywiththecharacterofFitzpatrick;towhich,indeed,hedidnotdostrictjustice,especiallyinwhatrelatedtohislady。Hesaidshewasthemostinnocent,themostinjuredwomanalive,andthatfromcompassionalonehehadundertakenhercause。

  HethendeclaredanintentionofgoingthenextmorningtoFitzpatrick’slodgings,inordertoprevailwithhim,ifpossible,toconsenttoaseparationfromhiswife,who,thepeersaid,wasinapprehensionsforherlife,ifsheshouldeverreturntobeunderthepowerofherhusband。LordFellamaragreedtogowithhim,thathemightsatisfyhimselfmoreconcerningJonesandthecircumstancesoftheduel;forhewasbynomeanseasyconcerningtheparthehadacted。Themomenthislordshipgaveahintofhisreadinesstoassistinthedeliveryofthelady,itwaseagerlyembracedbytheothernobleman,whodependedmuchontheauthorityofLordFellamar,ashethoughtitwouldgreatlycontributetoaweFitzpatrickintoacompliance;andperhapshewasintheright;forthepoorIrishmannosoonersawthesenoblepeershadundertakenthecauseofhiswife,thanhesubmitted,andarticlesofseparationweresoondrawnupandsignedbetweentheparties。

  Fitzpatrick,whohadbeensowellsatisfiedbyMrs。WatersconcerningtheinnocenceofhiswifewithJonesatUpton,or,perhaps,fromsomeotherreasons,wasnowbecomesoindifferenttothatmatter,thathespokehighlyinfavourofJonestoLordFellamar,tookalltheblameuponhimself,andsaidtheotherhadbehavedverymuchlikeagentlemanandamanofhonour;anduponthatlord’sfurtherinquiryconcerningMr。Jones,Fitzpatricktoldhimhewasnephewtoagentlemanofverygreatfashionandfortune,whichwastheaccounthehadjustreceivedfromMrs。WatersafterherinterviewwithDowling。

  LordFellamarnowthoughtitbehovedhimtodoeverythinginhispowertomakesatisfactiontoagentlemanwhomhehadsogrosslyinjured,andwithoutanyconsiderationofrivalshipforhehadnowgivenoverallthoughtsofSophia,determinedtoprocureMr。

  Jones’sliberty,beingsatisfied,aswellfromFitzpatrickashissurgeon,thatthewoundwasnotmortal。HethereforeprevailedwiththeIrishpeertoaccompanyhimtotheplacewhereJoneswasconfined,towhomhebehavedaswehavealreadyrelated。

  Itwouldbeunpleasantandtedioustopaintthissceneinfulllength。Letitsufficetosay,thatthebehaviourofJoneswaskindtoexcess。Heomittednothingwhichhisinventioncouldsupply,toraiseandcomfortthedroopingspiritsofBlifil,beforehecommunicatedtohimtheresolutionofhisunclethathemustquitthehousethatevening。Heofferedtofurnishhimwithanymoneyhewanted,assuredhimofhisheartyforgivenessofallhehaddoneagainsthim,thathewouldendeavourtolivewithhimhereafterasabrother,andwouldleavenothingunattemptedtoeffectuateareconciliationwithhisuncle。

  Blifilwasatfirstsullenandsilent,balancinginhismindwhetherheshouldyetdenyall;but,findingatlasttheevidencetoostrongagainsthim,hebetookhimselfatlasttoconfession。Hethenaskedpardonofhisbrotherinthemostvehementmanner,prostratedhimselfontheground,andkissedhisfeet;inshort,hewasnowasremarkablymeanashehadbeenbeforeremarkablywicked。

  Jonescouldnotsofarcheckhisdisdain,butthatitalittlediscovereditselfinhiscountenanceatthisextremeservility。Heraisedhisbrotherthemomenthecouldfromtheground,andadvisedhimtobearhisafflictionsmorelikeaman;repeating,atthesametime,hispromises,thathewoulddoallinhispowertolessenthem;forwhichBlifil,makingmanyprofessionsofhisunworthiness,pouredforthaprofusionofthanks;andthen,hehavingdeclaredhewouldimmediatelydeparttoanotherlodging,Jonesreturnedtohisuncle。

  Partridgehadscarceseenhismastersincethehappydiscovery。

  Thepoorfellowwasunabletocontainorexpresshistransports。Hebehavedlikeonefrantic,andmadealmostasmanymistakeswhilehewasdressingJonesasIhaveseenmadebyHarlequinindressinghimselfonthestage。

  Mr。Jonesduringthisintervalattemptedonceortwicetospeak,butwasabsolutelyincapable,mutteringonly,orrathersighingout,somebrokenwords;whenSophiaatlength,partlyoutofpitytohim,andpartlytoturnthediscoursefromthesubjectwhichsheknewwellenoughhewasendeavouringtoopen,said-
