  ThesimplicityofPartridgesetJonesalaughing,andputafinalendtohisanger,whichhadindeedseldomanylongdurationinhismind;and,insteadofcommentingonhisdefence,hetoldhimheintendedpresentlytoleavethoselodgings,andorderedhimtogoandendeavourtogethimothers。

  WhichwehopewillbeveryattentivelyperusedbyyoungpeopleofbothsexesPartridgehadnosoonerleftMr。Jones,thanMr。Nightingale,withwhomhehadnowcontractedagreatintimacy,cametohim,and,afterashortsalutation,said,\"So,Tom,Ihearyouhadcompanyverylatelastnight。Uponmysoulyouareahappyfellow,whohavenotbeenintownaboveafortnight,andcankeepchairswaitingatyourdoortilltwointhemorning。\"Hethenranonwithmuchcommonplacerailleryofthesamekind,tillJonesatlastinterruptedhim,saying,\"IsupposeyouhavereceivedallthisinformationfromMrs。Miller,whohathbeenupherealittlewhileagotogivemewarning。Thegoodwomanisafraid,itseems,ofthereputationofherdaughters。\"

  Jonespromisedhewouldnot;andsaid,uponreflection,hethought,ashehaddeterminedandwasobligedtoleaveher,hetookthemostprudentmethod。HethentoldNightingaleheshouldbeverygladtolodgeinthesamehousewithhim;anditwasaccordinglyagreedbetweenthem,thatNightingaleshouldprocurehimeitherthegroundfloor,orthetwopairofstairs;fortheyounggentlemanhimselfwastooccupythatwhichwasbetweenthem。

  ThisNightingale,ofwhom,weshallbepresentlyobligedtosayalittlemore,wasintheordinarytransactionsoflifeamanofstricthonour,and,whatismorerareamongyounggentlemenofthetown,oneofstricthonestytoo;yetinaffairsoflovehewassomewhatlooseinhismorals;notthathewasevenhereasvoidofprincipleasgentlemensometimesare,andofteneraffecttobe;butitiscertainhehadbeenguiltyofsomeindefensibletreacherytowomen,andhad,inacertainmystery,calledmakinglove,practisedmanydeceits,which,ifhehadusedintrade,hewouldhavebeencountedthegreatestvillainuponearth。

  Butastheworld,Iknownotwellforwhatreason,agreetoseethistreacheryinabetterlight,hewassofarfrombeingashamedofhisiniquitiesofthiskind,thathegloriedinthem,andwouldoftenboastofhisskillingainingofwomen,andhistriumphsovertheirhearts,forwhichhehadbeforethistimereceivedsomerebukesfromJones,whoalwaysexprestgreatbitternessagainstanymisbehaviourtothefairpartofthespecies,who,ifconsidered,hesaid,astheyoughttobe,inthelightofthedearestfriends,weretobecultivated,honoured,andcaressedwiththeutmostloveandtenderness;but,ifregardedasenemies,wereaconquestofwhichamanoughtrathertobeashamedthantovaluehimselfuponit。

  AshortaccountofthehistoryofMrs。MillerJonesthisdayeataprettygooddinnerforasickman,thatistosay,thelargerhalfofashoulderofmutton。Intheafternoon,hereceivedaninvitationfromMrs。Millertodrinktea;forthatgoodwoman,havinglearnt,eitherbymeansofPartridge,orbysomeothermeansnaturalorsupernatural,thathehadaconnexionwithMr。

  Allworthy,couldnotendurethethoughtsofpartingwithhiminanangrymanner。

  Jonesacceptedtheinvitation;andnosoonerwastheteakettleremoved,andthegirlssentoutoftheroom,thanthewidow,withoutmuchpreface,beganasfollows:\"Well,thereareverysurprizingthingshappeninthisworld;butcertainlyitisawonderfulbusinessthatIshouldhavearelationofMr。Allworthyinmyhouseandneverknowanythingofthematter。Alas!sir,youlittleimaginewhatafriendthatbestofgentlemenhathbeentomeandmine。Yes,sir,Iamnotashamedtoownit;itisowingtohisgoodnessthatI

  Sheusedmysistersobarbarously,oftenupbraidingherwithherbirthandpoverty,callingherinderisionagentlewoman,thatIbelievesheatlengthbroketheheartofthepoorgirl。Inshort,shelikewisediedwithinatwelvemonthaftermyfather。Fortunethoughtpropertoprovidebetterforme,andwithinamonthfromhisdeceaseIwasmarriedtoaclergyman,whohadbeenmyloveralongtimebefore,andwhohadbeenveryillusedbymyfatheronthataccount:forthoughmypoorfathercouldnotgiveanyofusashilling,yethebredusupasdelicately,consideredus,andwouldhavehadusconsiderourselves,ashighlyasifwehadbeentherichestheiresses。Butmydearhusbandforgotallthisusage,andthemomentwewerebecomefatherless,heimmediatelyrenewedhisaddressestomesowarmly,thatI,whoalwaysliked,andnowmorethaneveresteemedhim,sooncomplied。FiveyearsdidIliveinastateofperfecthappinesswiththatbestofmen,tillatlast-Oh!cruel!cruelfortune,thateverseparatedus,thatdeprivedmeofthekindestofhusbandsandmypoorgirlsofthetenderestparent-Omypoorgirls!youneverknowtheblessingwhichyelost-Iamashamed,Mr。Jones,ofthiswomanishweakness;butIshallnevermentionhimwithouttears。\"\"I

  Thereakindofsympathyinhonestminds,bymeansofwhichtheygiveaneasycredittoeachother。Mrs。MillerbelievedallwhichJonestoldhertobetrue,andexprestmuchpityandconcernforhim。Shewasbeginningtocommentonthestory,butJonesinterruptedher;for,asthehourofassignationnowdrewnigh,hebegantostipulateforasecondinterviewwiththeladythatevening,whichhepromisedshouldbethelastatherhouse;

  swearing,atthesametime,thatshewasoneofgreatdistinction,andthatnothingbutwhatwasintirelyinnocentwastopassbetweenthem;andIdofirmlybelieveheintendedtokeephisword。

  Mrs。Millerwasatlengthprevailedon,andJonesdepartedtohischamber,wherehesatalonetilltwelveo’clock,butnoLadyBellastonappeared。

  AswehavesaidthatthisladyhadagreataffectionforJones,andasitmusthaveappearedthatshereallyhadso,thereadermayperhapswonderatthefirstfailureofherappointment,assheapprehendedhimtobeconfinedbysickness,aseasonwhenfriendshipseemsmosttorequiresuchvisits。Thisbehaviour,therefore,inthelady,may,bysome,becondemnedasunnatural;butthatisnotourfault;forourbusinessisonlytorecordtruth。

  Chapter6

  ContainingascenewhichwedoubtnotwillaffectallourreadersMr。Jonesclosednothiseyesduringalltheformerpartofthenight;notowingtoanyuneasinesswhichheconceivedatbeingdisappointedbyLadyBellaston;norwasSophiaherself,thoughmostofhiswakinghourswerejustlytobechargedtoheraccount,thepresentcauseofdispellinghisslumbers。Infact,poorJoneswasoneofthebest-naturedfellowsalive,andhadallthatweaknesswhichiscalledcompassion,andwhichdistinguishesthisimperfectcharacterfromthatnoblefirmnessofmind,whichrollsaman,asitwere,withinhimself,andlikeapolishedbowl,enableshimtorunthroughtheworldwithoutbeingoncestoppedbythecalamitieswhichhappentoothers。Hecouldnothelp,therefore,compassionatingthesituationofpoorNancy,whoseloveforMr。Nightingaleseemedtohimsoapparent,thathewasastonishedattheblindnessofhermother,whohadmorethanonce,theprecedingevening,remarkedtohimthegreatchangeinthetemperofherdaughter,\"whofrombeing,\"shesaid,\"oneoftheliveliest,merriestgirlsintheworld,was,onasudden,becomeallgloomandmelancholy。\"

  Sleep,however,atlengthgotthebetterofallresistance;andnowasifhehadalreadybeenadeity,astheantientsimagined,andanoffendedonetoo,heseemedtoenjoyhisdear-boughtconquest-Tospeaksimply,andwithoutanymetaphor,Mr。Jonesslepttilleleventhenextmorning,andwould,perhaps,havecontinuedinthesamequietsituationmuchlonger,hadnotaviolentuproarawakenedhim。

  ContainingstrangemattersAthisreturntohislodgings,Jonesfoundthesituationofaffairsgreatlyalteredfromwhattheyhadbeeninathisdeparture。

  Themother,thetwodaughters,andyoungMr。Nightingale,werenowsatdowntosuppertogether,whentheunclewas,athisowndesire,introducedwithoutanyceremonyintothecompany,toallofwhomhewaswellknown;forhehadseveraltimesvisitedhisnephewatthathouse。

  TheoldgentlemanimmediatelywalkeduptoMissNancy,salutedandwishedherjoy,ashedidafterwardsthemotherandtheothersister;andlastly,hepaidthepropercomplimentstohisnephew,withthesamegoodhumourandcourtesy,asifhisnephewhadmarriedhisequalorsuperiorinfortune,withallthepreviousrequisitesfirstperformed。

  MissNancyandhersupposedhusbandbothturnedpale,andlookedratherfoolishthanotherwiseuponthisoccasion;butMrs。Millertookthefirstopportunityofwithdrawing;and,havingsentforJonesintothedining-room,shethrewherselfathisfeet,andinamostpassionatefloodoftears,calledhimhergoodangel,thepreserverofherpoorlittlefamily,withmanyotherrespectfulandendearingappellations,andmadehimeveryacknowledgmentwhichthehighestbenefitcanextractfromthemostgratefulheart。

  Afterthefirstgustofherpassionwasalittleover,whichshedeclared,ifshehadnotvented,wouldhavebursther,sheproceededtoinformMr。JonesthatallmattersweresettledbetweenMr。

  Nightingaleandherdaughter,andthattheyweretobemarriedthenextmorning;atwhichMr。Joneshavingexpressedmuchpleasure,thepoorwomanfellagainintoafitofjoyandthanksgiving,whichheatlengthwithdifficultysilenced,andprevailedonhertoreturnwithhimbacktothecompany,whomtheyfoundinthesamegoodhumourinwhichtheyhadleftthem。

  Ashortchapter,whichconcludesthebookThelongabsenceoftheuncleandnephewhadoccasionedsomedisquietinthemindsofallwhomtheyhadleftbehindthem;andthemore,as,duringtheprecedingdialogue,theunclehadmorethanonceelevatedhisvoice,soastobehearddownstairs;which,thoughtheycouldnotdistinguishwhathesaid,hadcausedsomeevilforebodinginNancyandhermother,and,indeed,eveninJoneshimself。

  Whenthegoodcompany,therefore,againassembled,therewasavisiblealterationinalltheirfaces;andthegoodhumourwhich,attheirlastmeeting,universallyshoneforthineverycountenance,wasnowchangedintoamuchlessagreeableaspect。Itwasachange,indeed,commonenoughtotheweatherinthisclimate,fromsunshinetoclouds,fromJunetoDecember。

  Thisalterationwasnot,however,greatlyremarkedbyanypresent;

  forastheywereallnowendeavouringtoconcealtheirownthoughts,andtoactapart,theybecamealltoobusilyengagedinthescenetobespectatorsofit。Thusneithertheunclenornephewsawanysymptomsofsuspicioninthemotherordaughter;nordidthemotherordaughterremarktheoveractedcomplacenceoftheoldman,northecounterfeitsatisfactionwhichgrinnedinthefeaturesoftheyoungone。

  Somethinglikethis,Ibelieve,frequentlyhappens,wherethewholeattentionoftwofriendsbeingengagedinthepartwhicheachistoact,inordertoimposeontheother,neitherseesnorsuspectstheartspractisedagainsthimself;andthusthethrustofbothtoborrownoimpropermetaphorontheoccasionaliketakesplace。

  Fromthesamereasonitisnounusualthingforbothpartiestobeoverreachedinabargain,thoughtheonemustbealwaysthegreaterloser;aswashewhosoldablindhorse,andreceivedabadnoteinpayment。

  Ourcompanyinabouthalfanhourbrokeup,andtheunclecarriedoffhisnephew;butnotbeforethelatterhadassuredMissNancy,inawhisper,thathewouldattendherearlyinthemorning,andfulfilallhisengagements。
