  TheEpiscopalchurch,asbelongingtotheleastnumerouscongregation,wasattheextremeleft,andthesmallestbuildingofall。Itwaseasilyrecognized。Alltheotherswereinasortofquasi—Italianstyleoftheseventeenthcentury,likethosecommonlyfoundinNewEngland;butthiswasinakindof\"carpenter’sGothic\"whichhadgrownoutofvaguerecollectionsofthemother—country。TothisbuildingIwastakenforbaptism,andwithitareconnectedmyfirstrecollectionsofpublicworship。MyparentswereverydevotedmembersoftheProtestantEpiscopalChurch。Withasmallnumberofothersoflikemind,theyhadtakenrefugeinitfromthestormsoffanaticismwhichsweptthroughwesternNewYorkduringtheearlyyearsofthenineteenthcentury。Forthatwasthetimeofgreat\"revivals。\"
