  Thefirewasdancing,andtheshadowofAnsell,whostoodcloseuptoit,seemedtodominatethelittleroom。Hewasstilltalking,orratherjerking,andhewasstilllightingmatchesanddroppingtheirendsuponthecarpet。Nowandthenhewouldmakeamotionwithhisfeetasifhewererunningquicklybackwardupstairs,andwouldtreadontheedgeofthefender,sothatthefire—ironswentflyingandthebuttered—bundishescrashedagainsteachotherinthehearth。Theotherphilosopherswerecrouchedinoddshapesonthesofaandtableandchairs,andone,whowasalittlebored,hadcrawledtothepianoandwastimidlytryingthePreludetoRhinegoldwithhiskneeuponthesoftpedal。Theairwasheavywithgoodtobacco—smokeandthepleasantwarmthoftea,andasRickiebecamemoresleepytheeventsofthedayseemedtofloatonebyonebeforehisacquiescenteyes。InthemorninghehadreadTheocritus,whomhebelievedtobethegreatestofGreekpoets;hehadlunchedwithamerrydonandhadtastedZwiebackbiscuits;thenhehadwalkedwithpeopleheliked,andhadwalkedjustlongenough;andnowhisroomwasfullofotherpeoplewhomheliked,andwhentheylefthewouldgoandhavesupperwithAnsell,whomhelikedaswellasanyone。Ayearagohehadknownnoneofthesejoys。Hehadcreptcoldandfriendlessandignorantoutofagreatpublicschool,preparingforasilentandsolitaryjourney,andprayingasahighestfavourthathemightbeleftalone。Cambridgehadnotansweredhisprayer。Shehadtakenandsoothedhim,andwarmedhim,andhadlaughedathimalittle,sayingthathemustnotbesotragicyetawhile,forhisboyhoodhadbeenbutadustycorridorthatledtothespacioushallsofyouth。Inoneyearhehadmademanyfriendsandlearntmuch,andhemightlearnevenmoreifhecouldbutconcentratehisattentiononthatcow。
