  (ll。184—211)Soontheycametothehouseofheaven—nurturedCeleusandwentthroughtheporticotowheretheirqueenlymothersatbyapillaroftheclose—fittedroof,holdingherson,atenderscion,inherbosom。Andthegirlsrantoher。Butthegoddesswalkedtothethreshold:andherheadreachedtheroofandshefilledthedoorwaywithaheavenlyradiance。ThenaweandreverenceandpalefeartookholdofMetaneira,andsheroseupfromhercouchbeforeDemeter,andbadeherbeseated。ButDemeter,bringerofseasonsandgiverofperfectgifts,wouldnotsituponthebrightcouch,butstayedsilentwithlovelyeyescastdownuntilcarefulIambeplacedajointedseatforherandthrewoveritasilveryfleece。Thenshesatdownandheldherveilinherhandsbeforeherface。Alongtimeshesatuponthestool(6)withoutspeakingbecauseofhersorrow,andgreetednoonebywordorbysign,butrested,neversmiling,andtastingneitherfoodnordrink,becauseshepinedwithlongingforherdeep—bosomeddaughter,untilcarefulIambe——whopleasedhermoodsinaftertimealso——movedtheholyladywithmanyaquipandjesttosmileandlaughandcheerherheart。ThenMetaneirafilledacupwithsweetwineandofferedittoher;butsherefusedit,forshesaiditwasnotlawfulforhertodrinkredwine,butbadethemmixmealandwaterwithsoftmintandgivehertodrink。AndMetaneiramixedthedraughtandgaveittothegoddessasshebade。SothegreatqueenDeoreceivedittoobservethesacrament……(7)

  AndImyselfwillteachmyrites,thathereafteryoumayreverentlyperformthemandsowinthefavourofmyheart。\'
