  ItappearedtobetheplanofLudloerathertodampthantostimulatemyzeal。Hediscouragedallattemptstorenewthesubjectinconversation。HedweltuponthearduousnessoftheofficetowhichIaspired,thetemptationstoviolatemydutywithwhichIshouldbecontinuallybeset,theinevitabledeathwithwhichtheslightestbreachofmyengagementswouldbefollowed,andthelongapprenticeshipwhichitwouldbenecessaryformetoserve,beforeIshouldbefittedtoenterintothisconclave。

  Sometimesmycouragewasdepressedbytheserepresentations。

  Myzeal,however,wassuretorevive;andatlengthLudloedeclaredhimselfwillingtoassistmeintheaccomplishmentofmywishes。Forthisend,itwasnecessary,hesaid,thatI

  Afterhavingsolemnlyavowedmyresolutiontobethussincereinmyconfession,anyparticleofreserveorduplicitywouldcostmemylife。

  Thisindeedwasasubjecttobedeeplythoughtupon。HithertoIhadbeenguiltyofconcealmentwithregardtomyfriend。Ihadenteredintonoformalcompact,buthadbeenconscioustoakindoftacitobligationtohidenoimportanttransactionofmylifefromhim。Thisconsciousnesswasthesourceofcontinualanxiety。I

  Therewas,indeed,anavenuebywhichtoescapethesedifficulties,ifitdidnot,atthesametime,plungemeintogreater。Myconfessionsmight,inotherrespects,beunbounded,butmyreserves,inthisparticular,mightbecontinued。YetshouldInotexposemyselftoformidableperils?Wouldmysecretbeforeverunsuspectedandundiscovered?
