  couldnotdisengagemymind,thatthesceneheredepictedwasadream,contributedtomyperseverance。Invainthesolemnintroductionofmyuncle,hisappealstomyfortitude,andallusionstosomethingmonstrousintheeventshewasabouttodisclose;invainthedistressfulperplexity,themysterioussilenceandambiguousanswersofmyattendants,especiallywhentheconditionofmybrotherwasthethemeofmyinquiries,wereremembered。IrecalledtheinterviewwithWielandinmychamber,hispreternaturaltranquillitysucceededbyburstsofpassionandmenacingactions。Allthesecoincidedwiththetenorofthispaper。

  Thepaperdroppedfrommyhand,andmyeyesfollowedit。I

  shrunkback,asiftoavoidsomepetrifyinginfluencethatapproachedme。Mytonguewasmute;allthefunctionsofnaturewereatastand,andIsunkuponthefloorlifeless。

  Iwillnotdwelluponthelongtrainofdrearysensations,andthehideousconfusionofmyunderstanding。Timeslowlyrestoreditscustomaryfirmnesstomyframe,andordertomythoughts。Theimagesimpresseduponmymindbythisfatalpaperweresomewhateffacedbymymalady。Theywereobscureanddisjointedlikethepartsofadream。Iwasdesirousoffreeingmyimaginationfromthischaos。ForthisendIquestionedmyuncle,whowasmyconstantcompanion。Hewasintimidatedbytheissueofhisfirstexperiment,andtookpainstoeludeordiscouragemyinquiry。Myimpetuositysometimescompelledhimtohaveresorttomisrepresentationsanduntruths。
