  Unfortunately,withthisshamefulconvictioncamethesoundofabellringingsomewhereinthedepthsofthebuilding,andtheshufflingoffeetontheoutersteps。Thelightofhisfirehadevidentlybeenseen,andlikeabeaconhadattractedsomewanderingandpossiblyintoxicatedmarinerwithAmericanpapers。Theconsulwalkedintothehallwithasuddenrighteousfrigidityofmanner。

  Itwasonethingtobelounginginone\'sownofficeontheSabbathday,andquiteanothertobedeliberatelycallingthereonbusiness。

  Heopenedthefrontdoor,andamiddle-agedmanentered,accompanyingandpartlyshovingforwardamorediffidentandyoungerone。
