  Day,meantime,althoughfullblownandradiantonthemountainsummitsaroundus,wasyetnebulousanduncertaininthevalleysintowhichwewereplunging。Lightsstillglimmeredinthecabinsandfewranchbuildingswhichbegantoindicatethethickersettlements。Andtheshadowswereheaviestinalittlecopse,whereanotefromJudgeThompsoninthecoachwashandeduptoYubaBill,whoatonceslowlybegantodrawuphishorses。Thecoachstoppedfinallynearthejunctionofasmallcrossroad。AtthesamemomentMissMullinsslippeddownfromthevehicle,and,withapartingwaveofherhandtotheJudge,whohadassistedherfromthesteps,trippeddownthecrossroad,anddisappearedinitssemi-

  obscurity。Tooursurprisethestagewaited,Billholdingthereinslistlesslyinhishands。Fiveminutespassed——aneternityofexpectation,and,astherewasthatinYubaBill\'sfacewhichforbadeidlequestioning,anachingvoidofsilencealso!Thiswasatlastbrokenbyastrangevoicefromtheroad:——

  Thecoachstartedforward。Presentlyweheardthesoundofotherwheelsbehindus。Weallcranedournecksbackwardtogetaviewoftheunknown,butbythegrowinglightwecouldonlyseethatwewerefollowedatadistancebyabuggywithtwofiguresinit。

  EvidentlyPollyMullinsandherlover!Wehopedthattheywouldpassus。Butthevehicle,althoughdrawnbyafasthorse,preserveditsdistancealways,anditwasplainthatitsdriverhadnodesiretosatisfyourcuriosity。TheExpressmanhadrecoursetoBill。

  Whenyourhoary-headedolegrandfather,or,tospeakplainer,thatpartikleroldwhiskey-soakerknownasYubaBill,wotsitsonthisbox,\"hecontinued,withadiabolicalwinkattheExpressman,\"waltzesintopervideforayoungcouplejeststartin\'inlife,thar\'snothin\'meanabouthisstyle,youbet。Hefillsthebilleverytime!SpeshulProvidencestakeabackseatwhenhe\'saround。”

  WhenthestationhotelandstragglingsettlementofSugarPine,nowdistinctandclearinthegrowinglight,atlastrosewithinrifleshotontheplateau,thebuggysuddenlydartedswiftlybyus,soswiftlythatthefacesofthetwooccupantswerebarelydistinguishableastheypassed,andkeepingtheleadbyadozenlengths,reachedthedoorofthehotel。Theyounggirlandhercompanionleapeddownandvanishedwithinaswedrewup。Theyhadevidentlydeterminedtoeludeourcuriosity,andweresuccessful。

  Butthematerialappetitesofthepassengers,sharpenedbythekeenmountainair,weremorepotentthantheircuriosity,and,asthebreakfast-bellrangoutatthemomentthestagestopped,amajorityofthemrushedintothedining-roomandscrambledforplaceswithoutgivingmuchheedtothevanishedcoupleortotheJudgeandYubaBill,whohaddisappearedalso。ThethroughcoachtoMarysvilleandSacramentowaslikewisewaiting,forSugarPinewasthelimitofBill\'sministration,andthecoachwhichwehadjustleftwentnofarther。Inthecourseoftwentyminutes,however,therewasaslightandsomewhatceremoniousbustlinginthehallandontheveranda,andYubaBillandtheJudgereappeared。

  Thelatterwasleading,withsomeelaborationofmanneranddetail,theshapelyfigureofMissMullins,andYubaBillwasaccompanyinghercompaniontothebuggy。Weallrushedtothewindowstogetagoodviewofthemysteriousstrangerandprobableex-brigandwhoselifewasnowlinkedwithourfairfellow-passenger。Iamafraid,however,thatweallparticipatedinacertainimpressionofdisappointmentanddoubt。Handsomeandevencultivated-looking,heassuredlywas——youngandvigorousinappearance。Buttherewasacertainhalf-shamed,half-defiantsuggestioninhisexpression,yetcoupledwithawatchfullurkinguneasinesswhichwasnotpleasantandhardlybecominginabridegroom——andthepossessorofsuchabride。Butthefrank,joyous,innocentfaceofPollyMullins,resplendentwithasimple,happyconfidence,meltedourheartsagain,andcondonedthefellow\'sshortcomings。Wewavedourhands;

  IthinkwewouldhavegiventhreerousingcheersastheydroveawayiftheomnipotenteyeofYubaBillhadnotbeenuponus。Itwaswell,forthenextmomentweweresummonedtothepresenceofthatsoft-heartedautocrat。

  WefoundhimalonewiththeJudgeinaprivatesitting-room,standingbeforeatableonwhichtherewasadecanterandglasses。

  Aswefiledexpectantlyintotheroomandthedoorclosedbehindus,hecastaglanceofhesitatingtoleranceoverthegroup。
