  Allplans,proposals,&c。priortothenineteenthofApril,i。e。tothecommencementofhostilities,arelikethealmanacsofthelastyear;which,thoughproperthenaresupersededanduselessnow。Whateverwasadvancedbytheadvocatesoneithersideofthequestionthen,terminatedinoneandthesamepoint。viz。aunionwithGreat-Britain:theonlydifferencebetweenthepartieswasthemethodofeffectingit;theoneproposingforce,theotherfriendship;butithathsofarhappenedthatthefirsthathfailed,andthesecondhathwithdrawnherinfluence。

  Asmuchhathbeensaidoftheadvantagesofreconciliationwhich,likeanagreeabledream,hathpassedawayandleftusaswewere,itisbutright,thatweshouldexaminethecontrarysideoftheargument,andinquireintosomeofthemanymaterialinjurieswhichthesecoloniessustain,andalwayswillsustain,bybeingconnectedwith,anddependentonGreatBritain:

  Toexaminethatconnectionanddependence,ontheprinciplesofnatureandcommonsense,toseewhatwehavetotrustto,ifseparated,andwhatwearetoexpect,ifdependant。

  Ihavehearditassertedbysome,thatasAmericahathflourishedunderherformerconnectionwithGreatBritainthatthesameconnectionisnecessarytowardsherfuturehappiness,andwillalwayshavethesameeffect。
