  WHYLEARNEDECONOMISTSASSERTWHATISFALSE

  HOWEVERobviouslyunjustmayhetheassertionofthemenofsciencethatthewelfareofhumanitymustconsistintheverythingthatisprofoundlyrepulsivetohumanfeelings—inmonotonous,enforcedfactorylabor—themenofsciencewereinevitablyledtothenecessityofmakingthisobviouslyunjustassertion,justasthetheologiansofoldwereinevitablyledtomaketheequallyevidentunjustassertionthatslavesandtheirmasterswerecreaturesdifferinginkind,andthattheinequalityoftheirpositioninthisworldwouldbecompensatedinthenext。

  Thecauseofthisevidentlyunjustassertionisthatthosewhohaveformulated,andwhoareformulating,thelawsofsciencebelongtothewell—to—doclasses,andaresoaccustomedtotheconditions,advantageousforthemselves,amongwhichtheylive,thattheydonotadmitthethoughtthatsocietycouldexistunderotherconditions。

  Theconditionoflifetowhichpeopleofthewell—to—doclassesareaccustomedisthatofanabundantproductionofvariousarticlesnecessaryfortheircomfortandpleasure,andthesethingsareobtainedonlythankstotheexistenceoffactoriesandworksorganisedasatpresent。
