  IfthereisanyStateorcitywhichmightclaimtobetheAmericanheadquartersofthenature-trustingheresy,provideditbeone,thatStateisMassachusetts,andthatcityisitscapital。Theeffectwhichthesedoctrineshaveupontheconfidencereposedintheprofessionisamatterofopinion。Formyself,Idonotbelievethisconfidencecanbeimpairedbyanyinvestigationswhichtendtolimittheapplicationoftroublesome,painful,uncertain,ordangerousremedies。Nay,Iwillventuretosaythis,thatifeveryspecificweretofailutterly,ifthecinchonatreesalldiedout,andthearsenicmineswereexhausted,andthesulphurregionswereburnedup,ifeverydrugfromthevegetable,animal,andmineralkingdomweretodisappearfromthemarket,abodyofenlightenedmen,organizedasadistinctprofession,wouldberequiredjustasmuchasnow,andrespectedandtrustedasnow,whoseprovinceshouldbetoguardagainstthecausesofdisease,toeliminatethemifpossiblewhenstillpresent,toorderalltheconditionsofthepatientsoastofavortheeffortsofthesystemtorightitself,andtogivethosepredictionsofthecourseofdiseasewhichonlyexperiencecanwarrant,andwhichinsomanycasesrelievetheexaggeratedfearsofsufferersandtheirfriends,orwarntheminseasonofimpendingdanger。Greatasthelosswouldbeifcertainactiveremediescouldnolongerbeobtained,itwouldleavethemedicalprofessionthemostessentialpartofit’sduties,andall,andmorethanall,itspresentshareofhonors;foritwouldbethedeath-blowtocharlatanism,whichdependsforitssuccessalmostentirelyondrugs,oratleastonanomenclaturethatsuggeststhem。
