andnotallowingthemtoindulge，exceptinsomefewmatters，theirindividualpleasuresandfancies。Nowtheirregularstrainofmusicisalwaysmadetenthousandtimesbetterbyattainingtolawandorder，andrejectingthehoneyedMuse-nothoweverthatwemeanwhollytoexcludepleasure，whichisthecharacteristicofallmusic。Andifamanbebroughtupfromchildhoodtotheageofdiscretionandmaturityintheuseoftheorderlyandseveremusic，whenhehearstheoppositehedetestsit，andcallsitilliberal；butiftrainedinthesweetandvulgarmusic，hedeemsthesevererkindcoldanddispleasing。Sothat，asIwassayingbefore，whilehewhohearsthemgainsnomorepleasurefromtheonethanfromtheother，theonehastheadvantageofmakingthosewhoaretrainedinitbettermen，whereastheothermakesthemworse。

Letusnowspeakofthemannerofteachingandimpartingthem，andthepersonstowhom，andthetimewhen，theyareseverallytobeimparted。Astheshipwrightfirstlaysdownthelinesofthekeel，andthus，asitwere，drawstheshipinoutline，sodoIseektodistinguishthepatternsoflife，andlaydowntheirkeelsaccordingtothenatureofdifferentmen’ssouls；seekingtrulytoconsiderbywhatmeans，andinwhatways，wemaygothroughthevoyageoflifebest。Nowhumanaffairsarehardlyworthconsideringinearnest，andyetwemustbeinearnestaboutthem-asadnecessityconstrainsus。
