  Tiredworkmenwiththeirbasketsattheirbackshadturnedontheirhomewardjourneytowonderathisspeed。HalfwaybetweentheshoreandPort-BredytownhehadmetCharlson,whohadbeenthefirstsurgeontohearoftheaccident。Hewasaccompaniedbyhisassistantinagig。BarnethadsentonthelattertothecoastincasethatDowne’spoorwifeshouldbythattimehavebeenreclaimedfromthewaves,andhadbroughtCharlsonbackwithhimtothehouse。

  Barnet’spresencewasnotneededhere,andhefeltittobehisnextdutytosetoffatonceandfindDowne,thatnootherthanhimselfmightbreakthenewstohim。
