GregoryofTourstellsusofanarchdeaconwho,havingbeenpartiallycuredofdiseaseoftheeyesbySt。Martin,soughtfurtheraidfromaJewishphysician,withtheresultthatneitherthesaintnortheJewcouldhelphimafterward。PopesEugeneIV,NicholasV,andCalixtusIIIespeciallyforbadeChristianstoemploythem。TheTrullaneanCouncilintheeighthcentury,theCouncilsofBeziersandAlbyinthethirteenth,theCouncilsofAvignonandSalamancainthefourteenth,theSynodofBambergandtheBishopofPassauinthefifteenth,theCouncilofAvignoninthesixteenth,withmanyothers,expresslyforbadethefaithfultocallJewishphysiciansorsurgeons;suchgreatpreachersasJohnGeilerandJohnHeroltthunderedfromthepulpitagainstthemandallwhoconsultedthem。Aslateasthemiddleoftheseventeenthcentury,whentheCityCouncilofHall,inWurtemberg,gavesomeprivilegestoaJewishphysician“onaccountofhisadmirableexperienceandskill。”theclergyofthecityjoinedinaprotest,declaringthat“itwerebettertodiewithChristthantobecuredbyaJewdoctoraidedbythedevil。”
