ThusbeganalongseriesofdemonstrationsagainstmagicfromthecentreofChristendom。In1437,andagainin1445,PopeEugeneIVissuedbullsexhortinginquisitorstobemorediligentinsearchingoutanddeliveringovertopunishmentmagiciansandwitcheswhoproducedbadweather,theresultbeingthatpersecutionreceivedafearfulimpulse。Buttheworstcamefortyyearslaterstill,when,in1484,therecametheyetmoreterriblebullofPopeInnocentVIII,knownasSummisDesiderantes,whichletinquisitorslooseuponGermany,withSprengerattheirhead,armedwiththeWitch-Hammer,thefearfulmanualMalleusMaleficarum,totortureanddestroymenandwomenbytensofthousandsforsorceryandmagic。Similarbullswereissuedin1504byJuliusII,andin1523byAdrianVI。
Thesystemofrepressionthusbegunlastedforhundredsofyears。
TheReformationdidlittletochangeit,andinGermany,whereCatholicsandProtestantsviedwitheachotherinprovingtheirorthodoxy,itwasatitsworst。OnGermansoilmorethanonehundredthousandvictimsarebelievedtohavebeensacrificedtoitbetweenthemiddleofthefifteenthandthemiddleofthesixteenthcenturies。
