ThenextgreatmanofthatagewhomthetheologicalandecclesiasticalforcesofthetimeturnedfromtherightpathwasVincentofBeauvais。DuringthefirsthalfofthetwelfthcenturyhedevotedhimselftothestudyofNatureinseveralofhermostinterestingfields。Toastronomy,botany,andzoologyhegavespecialattention,butinalargerwayhemadeageneralstudyoftheuniverse,andinaseriesoftreatisesundertooktorevealthewholefieldofscience。ButhisworksimplybecameavastcommentaryontheaccountofcreationgiveninthebookofGenesis。BeginningwiththeworkoftheTrinityatthecreation,hegoesontodetailtheworkofangelsinalltheirfields,andmakesexcursionsintoeverypartofcreation,visibleandinvisible,butalwayswiththemostcompletesubordinationofhisthoughttotheliteralstatementsofScripture。Couldhehavetakenthepathofexperimentalresearch,theworldwouldhavebeenenrichedwithmostpreciousdiscoveries;buttheforcewhichhadgivenwrongdirectiontoAlbertofBollstadt,backedasitwasbythewholeecclesiasticalpowerofhistime,wastoostrong,andinallthelifelabourofVincentnothingappearsofanypermanentvalue。HerearedastructurewhichtheadaptationoffactstoliteralinterpretationsofScriptureandtheapplicationoftheologicalsubtletiestonaturecombinetomakeoneofthemoststrikingmonumentsofhumanerror。[271]
