  Norwasthistheonlymisconceptionwhichforceditswayfromoursacredwritingsintomedievalmap-making:twootherswerealmostasmarked。FirstofthesewasthevagueterrorinspiredbyGogandMagog。FewpassagesintheOldTestamentaremoresublimethanthedenunciationofthesegreatenemiesbyEzekiel;andthewell-knownstatementintheApocalypsefastenedtheHebrewfeelingregardingthemwithanewmeaningintothemindoftheearlyChurch:henceitwasthatthemedievalmap-makerstookgreatpainstodelineatethesemonstersandtheirhabitationsonthemaps。Forcenturiesnomapwasconsideredorthodoxwhichdidnotshowthem。
