Whoeverfrequentsthehabitationsoftheluxuriouswillspeedilybeinfectedwiththevicesofluxury。Theministersandattendantsofasovereign，accustomedtothetrappingsofmagnificence，willturnwithdisdainfromthemeritthatisobscuredwiththecloudsofadversity。Invainmayvirtueplead，invainmaytalentssolicitdistinction，ifpovertyseem，tothefastidioussenseofthemaninplace，toenvelopthem，asitwere，withitsnoisomeeffluvia。Theverylacqueyknowshowtorepelunfortunatemeritfromthegreatman’sdoor。
Herethenwearepresentedwiththelessonwhichis，loudlyandperpetually，readthroughallthehauntsofmonarchy。Moneyisthegreatrequisite，forthewantofwhichnothingcanatone。Distinction，thehomageandesteemofmankind，aretobebought，notearned。Therichmanneednottroublehimselftoinvitethem，theycomeunbiddentohissurlydoor。Rarelyindeeddoesithappenthatthereisanycrimethatgoldcannotexpiate，anybasenessandmeannessofcharacterthatwealthcannotshroudinoblivion。Moneythereforeistheonlyobjectworthyofyourpursuit，anditisoflittleimportancebywhatsinisterandunmanlymeans，soitbebutobtained。
Itistruethatvirtueandtalentsdonotstandinneedofthegreatman’sassistance，andmight，iftheydidbutknowtheirworth，repayhisscornwithajustandenlightenedpity。But，unfortunately，theyareoftenignorantoftheirstrength，andadopttheerrorstheyseeuniversallyespoused。
Wereitotherwise，theywouldindeedbehappier，butthegeneralmannerswouldperhapsremainthesame。Thegeneralmannersarefashionedbytheformandspiritofthenationalgovernment；andif，inextraordinarycases，theyceasetoyieldtothemould，theyspeedilychangetheformtowhichtheyfailtosubmit。
