June16。ThismorningCountMunstercalledandseemedmuchexcitedbythefactthathehadreceivedadespatchfromBerlininwhichtheGermanGovernment——which，ofcourse，meanstheEmperor——hadstronglyandfinallydeclaredagainsteverythinglikeanarbitrationtribunal。Hewasclearlydisconcertedbythistooliteralacceptanceofhisownearlierviews，andsaidthathehadsenttoM。deStaalinsistingthatthemeetingofthesubcommitteeonarbitration，whichhadbeenappointedforthisday（Friday），shouldbeadjournedonsomepretextuntilnextMonday;\"for，\"saidhe，\"ifthesessiontakesplaceto—day，ZornmustmakethedeclarationinbehalfofGermanywhichthesenewinstructionsorderhimtomake，andthatwouldbeamisfortune。\"
Iwasverygladtoseethisevidenceofchangeofheartinthecount，andimmediatelyjoinedhiminsecuringtheadjournmenthedesired。Themeetingofthesubcommitteehasthereforebeendeferred，thereasonassigned，asIunderstand，beingthatBarond’Estournellesistoomuchoccupiedtobepresentatthetimefirstnamed。LaterCountMunstertoldmethathehaddecidedtosendProfessorZorntoBerlinatonceinordertolaythewholematterbeforetheForeignOfficeandinducetheauthoritiestomodifytheinstructions。Iapprovedthiscoursestrongly，whereuponhesuggestedthatIshoulddosomethingtothesamepurpose，andthisfinallyendedintheagreementthatHollsshouldgowithZorn。
