Evengrantingthepossibilityofmakingsuchamove，inthefaceofpopularprejudice，itwilldoubtlessseemsuicidal，onfirstthought，totakesoradicaladeparture;inthatitwouldbeheldtocripplethewholeacademicorganizationandsubverttheschemeofthingsacademic，forgoodandall:——which，bytheway，ispreciselywhatwouldhavetobeaimedat，sinceitisthepresentschemeandorganizationthatunavoidablyworkthemischief，andsince，also（astouchestheinterestofthehigherlearning），theyworknothingbutmischief。
Itshouldbeplain，onreflection，toanyonefamiliarwithacademicmattersthatneitheroftheseofficialbodiesservesanyusefulpurposeintheuniversity，insofarasbearsinanywayonthepursuitofknowledge。Theymayconceivablybothbeusefulforsomeotherpurpose，foreignoralientothequestoflearning;butwithinthelinesoftheuniversity’slegitimateinterestbotharewhollydetrimental，andverywastefullyso。
Theyareneedless，excepttotakecareofneedsandemergenciestowhichtheirownpresencegratuitouslygivesrise。Insofarastheseneedsanddifficultiesthatrequireexecutivesurveillancearenotsimplyandflagrantlyfactitious，——as，e。g。，theonerousdutiesofpublicity——theyarealtogethersuchneedsasariseoutofanexcessivesizeandagratuitouslycomplexadministrativeorganization;bothofwhichcharacteristicsoftheAmericanuniversityarecreatedbythegoverningboardsandtheirexecutiveofficers，fornobetterpurposethanavaingloriousself—complacency，andwithnobetterjustificationthananuncriticalprepossessiontotheeffectthatlargesize，complexorganization，andauthoritativecontrolnecessarilymakeforefficiency;whereas，inpointoffact，intheaffairsoflearningthesethingsunavoidablymakefordefeat。
