OfthesixcomediesofTerence,fourarederivedfromMenander;two,theHecyraandthePhormio,fromApollodorus。ThesetwoareinferiorincomicactionandthepeculiarsweetnessofMenandertotheAndria,theAdelphi,theHeautontimorumenus,andtheEunuchus:
butPhormioisamoredashingandamusingconvivialparasitethantheGnathoofthelast—namedcomedy。Therewerenumerousrivalsofwhomweknownexttonothing——exceptbythequotationsofAthenaeusandPlutarch,andtheGreekgrammarianswhocitedthemtosupportadictum——inthisasintheprecedingperiodsofcomedyinAthens,forMenander\'splaysarecountedbymanyscores,andtheywerecrownedbytheprizeonlyeighttimes。Thefavouritepoetwithcritics,inGreeceasinRome,wasMenander;andifsomeofhisrivalshereandtheresurpassedhimincomicforce,andout—strippedhimincompetitionbyanappositenesstotheoccasionthathadpreviouslyinthesamewaydeprivedthegeniusofAristophanesofitsduerewardinCloudsandBirds,hispositionaschiefofthecomicpoetsofhisagewasunchallenged。PlutarchveryunnecessarilydragsAristophanesintoacomparisonwithhim,totheconfusionoftheolderpoet。Theiraims,themattertheydealtin,andthetimes,werequitedissimilar。ButitisnowonderthatPlutarch,writingwhenAthenianbeautyofstylewasthedelightofhispatrons,shouldrankMenanderatthehighest。InwhatdegreeoffaithfulnessTerencecopiedMenander,whether,ashestatesofthepassageintheAdelphitakenfromDiphilus,verbumdeverbointhelovelierscenes—
