  Thedeitiesofthevulgararesolittlesuperiortohumancreatures,that,wheremenareaffectedwithstrongsentimentsofvenerationorgratitudeforanyheroorpublicbenefactor,nothingcanbemorenaturalthantoconverthimintoagod,andfilltheheavens,afterthismanner,withcontinualrecruitsfromamongmankind。Mostofthedivinitiesoftheancientworldaresupposedtohaveoncebeenmen,andtohavebeenbeholdenfortheirapotheosistotheadmirationandaffectionofthepeople。Therealhistoryoftheiradventures,corruptedbytradition,andelevatedbythemarvellous,becomeaplentifulsourceoffable;especiallyinpassingthroughthehandsofpoets,allegorists,andpriests,whosuccessivelyimproveduponthewonderandastonishmentoftheignorantmultitude。

  Painterstooandsculptorscameinfortheirshareofprofitinthesacredmysteries;andfurnishingmenwithsensiblerepresentationsoftheirdivinities,whomtheycloathedinhumanfigures,gavegreatencreasetothepublicdevotion,anddetermineditsobject。Itwasprobablyforwantoftheseartsinrudeandbarbarousages,thatmendeifiedplants,animals,andevenbrute,unorganizedmatter;andratherthanbewithoutasensibleobjectofworship,affixeddivinitytosuchungainlyforms。CouldanystatuaryofSYRIA,inearlytimes,haveformedajustfigureofAPOLLO,theconicstone,HELIOGABALUS,hadneverbecometheobjectofsuchprofoundadoration,andbeenreceivedasarepresentationofthesolardeity。35
