  Hiscompanionwashisoppositeinphysicalappearance,andinthosefeaturesandlinesthatsounmistakablyrevealthenatureandcharacterwithin。Shortandstout,inclinedindeedtofat,tohisgreatdistress,histhick—setfigureindicatedstrengthwithoutagility,soliditywithoutresilience。Hehadapleasant,openface,withakindly,twinklingblueeyethatgoeswithamerryheart,withagenial,sunnysoul。Buttherewasintheblueeyeandintheopenface,forallthetwinklesandthesmiles,acertainalertshrewdnessthatproclaimedthekeenmanofbusiness,andinthecleancutlipslaythesuggestionofresolutestrength。

  Alikablemanhewas,withaninfinitecapacityforhumour,butwithabedrockofunyieldingdeterminationinhimthatalwayssurprisedthosewhojudgedhimlightly。

  Themenwerefriends,andhadbeencomradesmoreorlessduringthosepioneerdaysthatfollowedtheirarrivalinthecountryfromScotlandsomedozenyearsago。Oftentheyhadfallenoutwitheachother,forDuffwasstormyoftemperandhadahabitoflettinghimselfswingoutuponitsgustsofpassion,recklessofconsequences;buthewasevertheonetoofferamendsandtoseekrenewalofgoodrelations。Hehadfewfriends,andsoheclungthemorecloselytothosehehad。Atsuchtimestheotherwouldwaitincool,good—temperedbutdeterminedaloofnessforhisfriend’sreturn。
