  Apartofthemixtureofmythoughtsduringthesesecondshadbeenthepossibility——absurd,preposterousthoughitlookswhenphrasedhere——ofsomechangeinherpersonthatwouldcorrespond,formetotheotherchangesIhadhadsuchkeenmomentsofflatteringmyselfIhadmadeout。Ihadjusthadthemoverinthesmoking—room,someofthesedifferences,andthenhadhadtimetoaskmyselfifIwerenotnowtobetreatedtothevisionofthegreatest,themostwonderful,ofall。Ihadalready,onfacingher,aftermylastmomentswithLadyJohn,seendifferencepeepoutatme,andIhadseentheimpressionofitconfirmedbywhathadafterwardshappened。Ithadbeeninherwayofturningfrommeafterthatbriefpassage;
