  OnlyhemissedtheIncubus。Searchingtheroomwithhiseyes,heatlengthdiscoveredthatincoherent,desiccated,butpersistentyouthVIS—A—VISwithastranger。Ordemadeoutthewhiteofhergownintheshadows,thewillowyoutlineofhersmallandslenderfigure,andthegraciousforwardbendofherhead。

  ThecompanypresentcaughtsightofOrdestandinginthedoorway,andsuspendedoccupationstoshoutathimjoyfully。Hewasevidentlyafavourite。Thestrangegirlinthecornerturnedtohimawhite,longface,ofwhichhecouldseeonlytheoutlineandtherednessofthelipswherethelamplightreachedthem。Sheleanedslightlyforwardandthelipsparted。Orde’smuscularfigure,standingsquareanduncompromisinginthedoorway,theout—of—doorfreshnessofhiscomplexion,thesteadinessofhiseyeslaughingbackagreeting,hadevidentlyattractedher。OrperhapsanythingwasarelieffromtheIncubus。
