  Ofcourse,IhadattheoutsetnoparticularreasontoconnectthesejourneyswiththedisappearanceofGodfreyStaunton,andwasonlyinclinedtoinvestigatethemonthegeneralgroundsthateverythingwhichconcernsDr。Armstrongisatpresentofinteresttous;but,nowthatIfindhekeepssokeenalook—outuponanyonewhomayfollowhimontheseexcursions,theaffairappearsmoreimportant,andIshallnotbesatisfieduntilIhavemadethematterclear。\"

  Thedoghadsuddenlyturnedoutofthemainroadintoagrass—grownlane。Halfamilefartherthisopenedintoanotherbroadroad,andthetrailturnedhardtotherightinthedirectionofthetown,whichwehadjustquitted。Theroadtookasweeptothesouthofthetownandcontinuedintheoppositedirectiontothatinwhichwestarted。

  Hesprangthroughagateintoafield,draggingthereluctantPompeyafterhim。Wehadhardlygotundertheshelterofthehedgewhenthecarriagerattledpast。IcaughtaglimpseofDr。Armstrongwithin,hisshouldersbowed,hisheadsunkonhishands,theveryimageofdistress。Icouldtellbymycompanion’sgraverfacethathealsohadseen。

  Thankstothislonelycottageandhisowndiscretion,Godfreyhasuptonowsucceeded。TheirsecretwasknowntonoonesavetomeandtooneexcellentservantwhohasatpresentgoneforassistancetoTrumpington。Butatlasttherecameaterribleblowintheshapeofdangerousillnesstohiswife。Itwasconsumptionofthemostvirulentkind。Thepoorboywashalfcrazedwithgrief,andyethehadtogotoLondontoplaythismatch,forhecouldnotgetoutofitwithoutexplanationswhichwouldexposehissecret。Itriedtocheerhimupbyawire,andhesentmeoneinreplyimploringmetodoallIcould。Thiswasthetelegramwhichyouappearinsomeinexplicablewaytohaveseen。Ididnottellhimhowurgentthedangerwas,forIknewthathecoulddonogoodhere,butIsentthetruthtothegirl’sfather,andheveryinjudiciouslycommunicatedittoGodfrey。
