  Herethen,Isaid,isanotherorderwhichwillhavetobeconveyedtoourguardians:Letourcitybeaccountedneitherlargenorsmall,butoneandself—sufficing。

  Andsurely,saidhe,thisisnotaverysevereorderwhichweimposeuponthem。

  Andtheother,saidI,ofwhichwewerespeakingbeforeislighterstill,—Imeanthedutyofdegradingtheoffspringoftheguardianswheninferior,andofelevatingintotherankofguardianstheoffspringofthelowerclasses,whennaturallysuperior。Theintentionwas,that,inthecaseofthecitizensgenerally,eachindividualshouldbeputtotheuseforwhichnaturewhichnatureintendedhim,onetoonework,andtheneverymanwoulddohisownbusiness,andbeoneandnotmany;andsothewholecitywouldbeoneandnotmany。

  Yes,hesaid;thatisnotsodifficult。
