  Whenthewomanreturnedtoherpost,Arielwasgone。Thepresenceofstrangers,andtheconfusionincidentaltothefestival,offeredherfacilitiesforescapingwhichwouldnothavepresentedthemselvesatanyothertime。Thatnightthesearchforherprovedtobeuseless。Thenextmorningbroughtwithitthelasttouchingandterribletidingsofher。Shehadstrayedbacktotheburial—ground;andshehadbeenfoundtowardsunrise,deadofcoldandexposure,onMiserrimusDexter’sgrave。Faithfultothelast,ArielhadfollowedtheMaster!Faithfultothelast,ArielhaddiedontheMaster’sgrave!

  Havingwrittenthesesadwords,Iturnwillinglytoalesspainfultheme。

  EventshadseparatedmefromMajorFitz—David,afterthedateofthedinner—partywhichhadwitnessedmymemorablemeetingwithLadyClarinda。FromthattimeIheardlittleornothingoftheMajor;andIamashamedtosayIhadalmostentirelyforgottenhim——whenIwasremindedofthemodernDonJuanbytheamazingappearanceofwedding—cards,addressedtomeatmymother—in—law’shouse!TheMajorhadsettledinlifeatlast。
