  Hewaspatientingoingovereveryobscurepoint,andillustratingfromthecharactersandconditionofdifferentsummerfolksthefactsofBessie’sentourage。Itisdoubtful,however,ifhesucceededinconveyingtohismotheraclearandjustnotionofthepurelychicnatureofthegirl。Intheendsheseemedtoconceiveofhersimplyasahussy,andsopronouncedher,withoutlimitorqualification,inspiteofJeff’slaughingattempttopalliateherbehavior,andtoinculpatehimself。
