In1846thecelebratedDr。Elliotson，apopularpractitioner，withavastclientele，pronouncedthefamousHarveianoration，inwhichheconfessedhisbeliefinMesmerism。Hewasdenouncedbythedoctorswithsuchthoroughresultsthathelosthispractice，anddiedwell—nighruined，ifnotheart—broken。
TheMesmericHospitalinMaryleboneRoadhasbeenestablishedbyhim。OperationsweresuccessfullyperformedunderMesmerism，andallthephenomenawhichhavelatelyoccurredatLeedsandelsewheretothesatisfactionofthedoctorswereproducedinMarylebonefifty—sixyearsago。Thirty—fiveyearsagoProfessorListerdidthesame——buttheintroductionofchloroformbeingmorespeedyandcertainasananaesthetic，killedforatimethemesmerictreatment。ThepublicinterestinMesmerismdieddown，andtheMesmericHospitalintheMaryleboneRoad，whichhadbeenunderacloudsincethesuppressionofElliotson，wasatlastclosed。LatelyweknowwhathasbeenthefateofMesmerandMesmerism。MesmerisspokenofinthesamebreathwithCountCagliostro，andMesmerismitselfisseldommentionedatall；but，then，wehearplentyofelectro—biology，therapeuticmagnetismandhypnotism——justso。Oh，shadesofMesmer，Puysegur，DuPotet，Elliotson——sicvosnonvobis！Still，IsayPalmamquimeruitferat。WhenIknewBaronduPotethewasonthebrinkofthegrave，andnearlyeightyyearsold。HewasanardentadmirerofMesmer；hehaddevotedhiswholelifetotherapeuticmagnetism，andhewasabsolutelydogmaticonthepointthatarealmagneticaurapassedfromtheMesmeristtothepatient。\"I
