  PresentlyCooperEdgecombeappeared,theemptypipeinhand,heldasonemightcaressaninestimabletreasure,adreamy,almostblissfulexpressionuponhissun-brownedface。

  UnclePhaetonwasmorethanwillingtodothehonoursofhispetinvention,andthisaffordedamosthappydiversion,althoughthedeepeningtwilighthinderedanyveryextensiveexamination。

  CooperEdgecombeshowedhimselfinavastlydifferentlightwhilethusengaged,hisshrewdquestions,hisaptcomments,quiteeffectuallyremovingthefarfromagreeabledoubtsbornofhisearlierwordsanddemeanour。

  Still,thatexaltationdidnotpreventunclePhaetonfromtakingallessentialprecautions,anditwasonlywhenanespeciallysecurelanding-placewassightedthathereallyattemptedtotouchtheearth。
