  Itwastimeforthedoctornow,andClaraBelle,tooanxioustowaitlonger,softlyturnedtheknobofhermother’sdoorandenteredtheroom。Theglowoftheopenfireilluminedthedarkestsideofthepoorchamber。Therewerenotreesnearthehouse,andafullNovembermoonstreamedinattheunblinded,uncurtainedwindows,lightingupthebareinterior——theunpaintedfloor,thegrayplasteredwalls,andthewhitecounterpane。

  AnewandmostardentpassionfortheclassicshadbeenborninEmmaJane’shithertounfertilebrain,forAbijahFlagg,whowascarryingoffalltheprizesatLimerickAcademy,hadwrittenheraletterinLatin,aletterwhichshehadbeenunabletotranslateforherself,evenwiththeaidofadictionary,andwhichshehadbeenapparentlyunwillingthatRebecca,herbosomfriend,confidant,androommate,shouldrenderintoEnglish。

  Anold-fashionedFemaleSeminary,withitsallotmentofonemedium-sizedroomtotwomediumsizedyoungfemales,gavesmallopportunitiesforprivacybynightorday,forneitherthedoublewashstand,northethusfarunimaginedbathroom,norevenindeedthehumbleandserviceablescreen,hadbeenrealized,inthesedarkagesofwhichIwrite。Accordingly,liketheirrationalostrich,whichdefendsitselfbythesimpleprocessofnotlookingatitspursuers,EmmaJanehadkeptherLatinletterinherclosedhand,inherpocket,orinheropenbook,flatteringherselfthatnoonehadnoticedherpleasedbewildermentatitsonlyhalf-imaginedcontents。
