  KNOWINGwithinmyselfthemannerinwhichthisPoemhasbeen

  produced,itisnotwithoutafeelingofregretthatImakeitpublic.

  WhatmannerImean,willbequitecleartothereader,whomustsoon

  perceivegreatinexperience,immaturity,andeveryerrordenotinga

  feverishattempt,ratherthanadeedaccomplished.Thetwofirst

  books,andindeedthetwolast,Ifeelsensiblearenotofsuch

  completionastowarranttheirpassingthepress;norshouldtheyifI

  thoughtayear’scastigationwoulddothemanygood;—itwillnot:the

  foundationsaretoosandy.Itisjustthatthisyoungstershoulddie

  away:asadthoughtforme,ifIhadnotsomehopethatwhileitis
