  Geoffreyhesitated。Theartofstatingcircumstancesimpliesthecultivationofaveryraregift——thegiftofarrangingideas。NoonewasbetteracquaintedwiththistruththanSirPatrick。HewaspurposelypuzzlingGeoffreyatstarting,underthefirmconvictionthathisclienthadsomethingtoconcealfromhim。Theoneprocessthatcouldbedependedonforextractingthetruth,underthosecircumstances,wastheprocessofinterrogation。IfGeoffreywassubmittedtoit,attheoutset,hiscunningmighttakethealarm。SirPatrick’sobjectwastomakethemanhimselfinviteinterrogation。Geoffreyinviteditforthwith,byattemptingtostatethecircumstances,andbyinvolvingthemintheusualconfusion。SirPatrickwaiteduntilhehadthoroughlylostthethreadofhisnarrative——andthenplayedforthewinningtrick。
